I wouldn't want to risk screwing up the threads, and losing a good fork. Just me though.

You can cut it down to size, but I wouldn't use a hacksaw unless you have a steerer cutting guide. Get the local bike shop to do it. The amount that needs cutting off = the total height of your locknut, and then minus 2mm so that the locknut lip is not tightened right down on the end of the steerer.
And also make sure you measure twice before getting it cut.

Thanks, I did grease them before fitting the crank, but will do it again soon. After really trying to tighten up the bolt on the crank today it did make some difference to the creak, but after a bit of good riding, it was also fairly easy to unscrew without too much effort.
So im not sure if they're coming loose from over tightening the first time round. I think it needs a close up inspection. -
Well I seem to have narrowed down the creaking to the left hand crank/bottom bracket area. The bottom bracket is Shimano Un52, which is a sealed cartridge BB, so that cant be regreased.
So im thinking the noise is from either bolt/crank connection to the spindle of the BB, or otherwise the pedal (but it doesnt feel or sound like its from there).
Either way, I was going to get the frame repainted at armourtex anyway, so would be dismantling everything soon. I just wanted to eliminate a crack, otherwise there wouldn't be much point painting it.

When I had a seized pedal and had tried all the wd40/leverage/etc stuff and it didn't work, i tried a heat treatment method. This involved pouring boiling water over the affected area very slowly, which actually was very effective, and the pedal came out with 1 turn of the spanner.
It could be worth a try, although in the pedal case it was easier because I had easy access to the problem area.

Well I finished building it about 2 months ago. So everything was greased up then.
The chain does not sit absolutely central on the chainring, but more over to the right. But then again it never creaked before this.

Over the last couple of days Ive been hearing a creaking sound coming from the chain / bottom bracket area. I did recently tighten up the chain tension, so thought it might have been binding, but after loosening it back it still made the same sound.
Looking at the chainline, it is also maybe about 1-2 mm out. So possibly that.
But if not, does this look like a crack to you, ( near the bottom of the seat tube lug) or just scratched paint?
I appreciate any advice.

Yeh I can post it. From the frames Ive bought before, it will probably cost £15 including packaging. Im not sure about the exact weight, maybe around 3-4kg? I can weigh it on monday.
So far though I have one other person interested in the frame though, so it might go to them first.
