I thought we'd agreed at the last meeting to be more active on Facebook.
I've tried to instigate a few discussions and stuff, and pasted a few lists over, but it's pretty much me, Neil and Matt talking at each other... Too many off-the-map survivalist social-mediaphobes in Birmingham polo!
I love lfgss as much as the next man, but it's not very good for attracting new players.

I don't know what Andy's plans are - I think he'd like to come, but he may be busy climbing mountains/building fires/whittling spoons from driftwood. We don't really know until a date gets announced.
Really enjoyed polo today - dry/smooth court makes such a difference. Nice to get peope over from Wolves, but slightly disappointing that we only attracted one other newb.
Oh well, if she starts playing regularly, and Joe does too, that's a start.
Just paid for my shafts - thought we were getting 1mm ones though?

As far as commitment to travel goes, I don't think it's quite as simple as Neil and Chan seem to be implying*. 2/3rds of my team are McJob Saturday-workers, so we are really limited in the time we can take off for any tournaments, but our no1 priority is the Euros and we'll do all we can to book those days off. I can't definitely say I would be available until we know the dates, and I'm sure that's true of many people.
I don't know if it would help, but we are planning/interminably discussing a one-day tournament at our single-court venue on March 17. We can realistically only cater for 8-10 teams, and we can't book the court, but could that be used as a step in the process?
*Apologies if I've misunderstood.

would the chosen birmingham team have to be 2/3 birmingham?
I'd love to play, but it depends what you guys reckon?
No, I don't think it would have to be 2/3 Birmingham. I guess it depends on actual dates and who's available, and then it's up for those two to decide upon a third. If it's a one-day Sunday tournament, I should be able to play pretty much any date except April 14th, but I probably can't do any Saturday for the next few months.

I think it's a staff/management issue - pretty much every chain restaurant and fast food joint gets 5. Either way, 1 star means 'serious improvements required' (or something; I can't be bothered to look) which isn't encouraging. And if a restaurant can't be bothered to improve its independently measured/externally researchable hygiene, what does that say about their attitude to the food quality?
There doesn't seem to be a strong correlation between cost and hygiene rating, but there are remarkably few choices of 4/5 stars in Birmingham, whereas other places I've been recently (Bristol/Devon) have plenty... Birmingham is just dirty.
I watched a trashy daytime documentary about it (I'm not proud) and some bloke was storing cooked chicken in a raw chicken box, open to the air, and he had four stars. The inspector didn't shut him down, just made a re-appointment to visit a few weeks laterand even then it was a downgrade from 4 to 3.
I reckon my kitchen would be a 2/3, but it's my filth and hence less worrying.

I retract my recommendation based on the one-star food hygiene rating it received. Basically, it's not worth the risk eating out in the 'food capital' (snigger) of the UK... May as well get some artisanal ingredients and stay at home. At least then when you get botulism or whatever, you've only yourself to blame.
Seriously though, why is Birmingham so filthy? The streets and the inside of restaurants must be the down there with the dirtiest in the country...

I reckon we should just list it, with the following key features, and let everyone else decide their teams/if they want to come...
[]Sunday 17th March, 10-4pm
[]10 team maximum, first come first served (three slots reserved for Birmingham, but we'll probably only be able to muster two at the most)
[*]Will be cancelled at 12 hours notice if the weather is looking awful, so don't book train tickets. But seriously your right Dan lets just throw it out there and see who fancies it? Its only a few weeks away so doubt they'll be massive lists of people wanting to come? I think we should be able to call it on the Friday weather wise.
Hyper/Neil wanna sign off on this and get it posted on the main forum? Or change it? It would be nice to get it on there before the weekend, giving everyone a few weeks notice.

One star. Unless you go to the one in the Arcadian.
-
That's not pessimistic! I'm just saying we need to be clear that people shouldn't book tickets to come up until they know what the weather is likely to do. But yeah, maybe 12 hours notice is too late. 24 then. If you rely on public transport you have to accept and get used to being fucked around with, so they probably won't mind anyway.
-
No idea where that list got to, but I'm sure I asked for two shafts.
I think we're overthinking what will be a one-day, weather dependant, not-that-competitive tournament. I reckon we should just list it, with the following key features, and let everyone else decide their teams/if they want to come...
- Sunday 17th March, 10-4pm
- 10 team maximum, first come first served (three slots reserved for Birmingham, but we'll probably only be able to muster two at the most)
- Will be cancelled at 12 hours notice if the weather is looking awful, so don't book train tickets.
The time, duration and cancellability should/will put off far-flung scenes from attending anyhow.
- Sunday 17th March, 10-4pm
Dry court! I'll head down at 10.30 - I expect most people on the list will be a bit late...
