For a tough commuting wheelset, think you'll find it hard to get anything much lighter than open pros? Maybe use DB spokes and lighter tyres? Don't know what rubber you use, but eg. I use G4000s all year round and puncture maybe once a year. That's something like 150g rotational weight less per wheel compared against something like an Armadillo?

Have recently fallen out of love with Romins.
I've been swinging between Romins and Toupes for a few years - get on fine with both but they give me @rse ache on the turbo (sit bones). Have been trying a Flite Gel Flow for a while now and been great so far. Not to my taste cosmetically, but you can't have everything...

I've got a charge spoon on my cyclocross/everyday bike and it's fine for rides under 40 miles. Nice tan colour with blue rails to match my blue bike and brown bartape.
Longer distances require a better saddle though, but I use a Selle Dynamic, which in no way looks remotely retro.
Completely agree - super comfy for commuting/mid distance. But not the best for long-distance - find the padding is too much for this.

Have a couple of early nights before hand, eat loads of pasta, stay off beer for a few days, then assuming you're relatively fit just make sure you're on top of nutrition and hydration. On longer rides I force myself to eat one "stick" of a Nature Valley cereal bar and a good swig of liquid every 10miles whether I think I need it or not. I know this works for me - you could well be different so just suss that out on practice rides. Agree with the 48:18 gearing above - that gets me over anything in Surrey and don't find myself spinning out too often. Oh, and get a good freewheel - recently converted to White from Shimano and it's like riding a different bike. Good luck :-)

^ Too bad Jim :-( Heal up soon...
There was a lot of it about yesterday ... out with BC yesterday and came off myself on ice just over the M25 towards Brasted. Luckily got away with bruised pride and ripped overshoes... looked like a woman cropped it at the same place and had the ambulance out. Will think twice about going out in 0degs in future...

Here's hoping for the rider.
If it's anything like what they've done in Railton Road/ Brixton, this is one of my least favourite attempts at "traffic calming". There's now a series of build-outs that create pinch points, so even if you take primary to assert your position you end up playing chicken with oncoming traffic - and around here there's enough "I'm bigger than you so get the f**k out of my way" drivers it's a bit sketchy for cyclists...

Well, it's all a bit of a shame isn't it? LA is the whipping boy for a sport in which everyone and their mum seems to have been bang at it. Hopefully this will be the end of it and we'll have a new cleaner era of cycling.
As for Lance, dark prince he may now be, but he's still responsible for a lot of my favourite cycling moments, and I won't be giving up my Livestrong Oakley Radars any time soon. Drugs or not, there's a bit of me that's always going to rate him...

Missus is working in Clerkenwell at the mo and has been told by a few colleagues to avoid keeping her bike in the street as they've lost a few. Anyone know of a good place to lock up around there?
