i have a frame that i want to setup as a geared bike. its a good frame, aende 531p. the problem is it only has a braze-on for a single gear shifter and i want to have derailleur both in the front and in the rear. didnt know that when i bought the bike online. i am thinking about filing away the single braze on and place exactly on top of it a double gear shifter with band so it wont show, so as far as looks go it wont be problem.is it feasible to do this myself without destroying the tubing.

file down either two sides of the axle so that you leave enough thread or widen the dropout. it really depends on what you think is more worth preserving. i have done both and both worked fine. the first time i did it, the hubs were not very good so i didnt care that much. it doesnt actually fuck them up, but if you want to resell them, then this might remove from their value. that sorted the problem really well.
but then i got some campag pista hubs that were in really good nick so i didnt want to mess up the axle in case i wanted to resell in the future. looking at the zenith price (21pounds) i would do that because the chrome might be harder and its easier to do a clean job.

Hey all,
i am planning a Staines to Oxford ride on this Thursday. Does anyone of you have experience with this route (Windsor-Wargrave-Reading-Oxford). I have bought the following material to read:

but found both not too helpful. The first is a thin book published in 2000, with detailed directions (i.e take a L here a R here..) but the maps are pretty poor. I reason that having to refer to the directions all the time will be annoying and i dont have a handlebar bag that would allow easy reading whilst riding. The second is more of a map, but again i found it pretty undetailed i.e. if there are no signs in the way we will constantly need to ask and guess and generally waste lots of time.
Do any of you have a route that has a bit more detail to provide or experience. I reckon the ideal would be a google-maps style map with route to browse and load onto a phone maps application. probably nothing like that around---would i make one ---dont know, i guess it could be helpful in the future. Anyway if you guys have any advice or experience or magically can tell me the temperature and general weather conditions for thursday it woudl be great.
I'll stop now.. -

stevo that was the idea i had originally, but i couldnt find any info about it either, i asked at condor and the guy told me he hasnt known of any. are we sure they exist, that would be my favourite option. frink i have no experience with blowtorches and i would be worried about putting flame on the frame with my little experience, i was hoping on using a good file and a lot of patience. anyone that would be happy to help me out with the torch if he is conviced he can do a good job?
