Went out at lunchtime and watched the larks larking about.

What a joy to see this. I bought one of these new in 1986/7 and rode it to Switzerland with full camping gear. Daft helicomatic rear hub, but a joy to ride and I deeply regret having parted with it.

Aha yes indeed. Your old friend has served us well, but in true middle-aged fashion I plan to ride my similarly-aged touring bike a bit more, with fatter tyres and everything.

I bought this on here many years ago. It’s a nice light 531c frame with gorgeous 653 straight chromed forks. Top tube is about 53.5 ctc, seat tube 53 ctc. Quite tatty with spots of rust and a few scrapes, but no major damage and it was still riding beautifully into this last winter.

Looking for £80 for this, would consider posting as I am now out near Aylesbury. Depending on pandemic issues, could arrange collection somewhere not too far away.

This chap is nearly 14 but still looks and behaves like a kitten. When we’re out, he finds the drawer with the pipe cleaners and gets them out and chases them round the house.

I had a lunchtime walk today, knowing that the weather won’t be so good for a while. Lots out there, mostly a bit too far away to get any decent photos. The larks were amazing - about 100 of them rampaging around the field.

Not very much out here at dawn. Plenty redwings, larks, gooses and these blurred pintails.

Many thanks! From where I was standing (in flood water) they were just little brown jobs. My camera got a closer view and then my Collins bird guide got me as far as suspecting pipitry.

I had a wet walk up Aylesbury vale as the light faded. Met a raven, some herons, a barn owl, some yellowhammers, redwings, wigeon and these chaps on the fence - pipits?

I don’t think so. It’s one of the normally less visible inhabitants of what is known locally as the tractor field, as its most obvious resident (apart from John in his mud barn) is this lovely red Nuffield. The digger has been almost completely hidden, but there are two artic trailers in the trees behind it.

Mrs Ludd was not so amused when I allowed a Luddlet to run amok with clippers. This is about two weeks on from the attack. You can just make out some hair reappearing at the sides.

Just finished M John Harrison’s “The sunken land begins to rise again”. Superb and disorientating. At times like Ackroyd or Sinclair but with a real sense of dislocated identities and lack of any certainty. You start off thinking you will discover something “real” within the narrative and then you discover that’s really not what the book is about at all.

I’ve yet to meet one, unless you can get a HP Laserjet 4 that can talk to a modern computer and for which you can still get toner. We had one from about 1993 and it lasted many years. Then computers got too clever for it or something, and we switched to something new and crap.

Ah, definitely wren. And pike. Wow. I’ve seen a cormorant tackle an eel but a pike is in a different league.
