I've ridden through twice on different routes, while riding across France. Both times it was the highlight. Lovely climbs, deserted roads, pretty villages, but very quiet in between.
Both times were in May so there were loads of Spring flowers, like more than I have ever seen - fields of primroses or daffodils almost as far as I could see!

I've used plastic bags to good effect before, in particular on the TCR when I don't have capacity to carry loads of gear.
They work very well between two layers of sock, and can keep the inner one dry while the outer one gets soaked during a downpour. Then magic happens if you keep riding and it warms up (but not in UK winter!): the wet sock gets dry and the dry one gets soaking wet, with sweat! -

I normally don't have much time for people who want to ride ultras on sub optimal bikes, eg the TCR on a Brompton, but this was interesting to read.
The main difference is that he'd ridden the event before so he knew exactly what he was taking on. And, having set it as the challenge to himself, he got round, so well done to him.
Also, while it would clearly be hell on the hike a bike sections, a long wheel-based bike should ride some of the rough terrain pretty well and be stable on the descents, so not entirely a crazy choice if you're going for a finish not a time. And as cargo bike go, an omnium must be about as light as it gets.

I had an OR Helium and wouldn't recommend. I used it to go across Australia. Mostly I didn't use the hoop setup but the time I did, I woke up with my heart racing and headache, feeling like I was suffocating. Had to keep the zip open after than to get enough air, which defeated the point.
I sold it on eBay after that. -

OK, getting on to this after putting it off for a few years. Have read quite a bit of the thread and the bikeradar article but head is spinning now.
Have ordered slow cooker, but how big an u/s cleaner do I need to take an 11-42 cassette? (I know I could work it out from looking at all the dimensions, but roughly - does it need to be say 3l , 4l or will 2l do?)
Small ones are ridiculously cheap (<£10) now so may just get one of those for chains if cassette needs a massive one.

I think the places have just been announced.
I've seen that Mikko and Doug are riding once again. Anyone from here? @jakemcree? -
