cool. i would love to be able to work up towards a 10k, that would be awesome. think my mental strength would break down before my physical strength tho! 10k is a long time to be in the water without any other form of stimulation. think i'd struggle getting used to that! kudos to you though.
im working towards an ironman in june called 'city to summit'. it's up in scotland with the swim part in the firth of forth, which i'm told is quite a tidal area and will be tough! i'm just hoping the RNLI will be on hand to stop me drifting off towards norway or something!
did a 400m time trial last night and got under 7mins so i'm happy with my progress i'm making. just need to up the endurance aspect of my sessions so that i get more stamina.
may also try and get down to dover before june so that i get at least one sea swim in before the big event! don't want to be completely unprepared!

Did you have ice in the lanes?
no ice, just lots of standing water. absolutely amazed that i didn't get a puncture as i went through miles and miles of roads covered in loose gravel washed onto the roads from the farming vehicles.
it snowed a bit but didn't settle. a lot of the houses around the biggin hill area had snow on their roofs which i was surprised to see from during the week. i swear it's got its own micro climate there!

last minute change of plans meant that i was free on saturday morning, so decided to head out and do the Hell of Ashdown which i've been meaning to do for a while.
it was a great route and i thoroughly enjoyed it. really glad i decided against fixed as i would have been seriously out of my depth on some of those hills!
anyway 80miles all in, 2500m climbing and felt fine afterwards. will look to do this every saturday early doors as my weekend training ride.

RANT ALERT
i now have to ring around all the different pools in london to try and find a pool that a) doesn't have lane closures due to private hire or swim lessons and b) that's not a womens only night and c) isn't just generally busy.
a few times now i've turned up and haven't been able to do any sets as the lanes are just too busy with breast strokers clogging up all the lanes! even the designated 'fast lanes'. what the fk can i do! so annoying and a waste of money paying when it's like that.
rant over

plans for the week was severely impacted by falling off my bike in the rain last monday night and falling heavily on my knee. took a week off.
back to work on sat and did 3 laps of swains lane for a total round trip of 9miles. felt alright and happy with steady progress. look to gradually increase this to somewhere around 6ish laps on my long run

I was wondering what bikes are out there for someone on a budget to do it on, or is it possible for me to return the arena to geared and do it on that?
depends on whether you are planning on riding with panniers or credit carding it and staying in B&B's etc.
i'd suggest riding a bike with panniers and camping along the way. if you can fit a rack on the raleigh then go for it.
do a couple of long days in it though before hand to make sure the set up is right for you

It's payday bitches and that means more events entered to bolster the summer schedule.
June 22nd Bob Graham Round Weekender (fell recce ahead of next years attempt)
i would be very interested in this...don't think i can justify it to the mrs after having dragged her away for the first week in june for my ironman...dam!

yeh it sounds fun, just seems a little pointless as it's so short... guess could do a few more laps afterwards!
haha don't fall into that trap! depends on how hard you try.
when i go with my gf i generally just mince about with some light jogging. it's good to get out and do stuff like this with her and give her some encouragement and not just be out for myself, but when i'm on my own it's full throttle and i'll be trying real hard with an intense 5km.
therefore it's a good way to mix up your training, with some tempo runs during the week, an intense sat morning 5km and then maybe a long run on the sunday, depending on how you are feeling

you're a sick man. a lot of people wouldn't even be able to ride up that.
I too am interested in park runs - how long are they / what times are they etc?
haha it's not as hard as it sounds honestly.
you should come along to the finsbury park park run. everyone meets at the cafe in the centre just before 9am. it's a good way of getting you out of bed early and making use of your sat morning.
it's a great atmosphere and there are plenty of people doing it. i was really surprised by the turn out and always feel better for making the effort afterwards.
too far south for me i'm afraid, based in north london
