I’m all for banning them in cities, seems a logical step to me.

I have a lot of time for this, but also have a nagging suspicion that it would lead to more vehicles on the road. For example my brother who is a farmer recently swapped a 90 land rover and a car to having just a pickup truck. He can't get away with a single cab as he has 2 kids, so needs something to move them around in. So in that case a pickup seems to be a win as it takes a car off the road.
I suspect I come at this from a rural point of view. The answer is obviously just banning anyone who lives in a city from buying one...

I would say that the tax is identical between a van and a pick up, so its not a pick up specific tax break.
A lot of traders are getting them because they can use them during the week for work, then at the weekend for a family car, so means they don't have to run another car.
Also currently it is almost impossible to get a new van as well.

Valid point, and that would be a wider issue with all commerical vehicles. I suspect it would then lead to a rise of cars\vans being designated as pool vehicles and that loophole being used...

I would be in favour of a speed limit on all commerical vehicles, so would be on board with a limit of 60mph on all pickups and vans, makes sense to me.

This is a great idea I think. its a flat rate of tax currently, so just maintain that for vehicles under £xk and then have punitive rates that bring it in line with other vehicles once that is breeched.

Why 40mph? I have to travel to get stuff from 40 odd miles away from specialist retailers, its still a genuine use of it?

I work in advertising, and work on motor brands, they amount of purchase decisions driven by advertising in this sector is tiny, so I don't think it would make a difference at all.

One thing that could be done would be take them back to being more basic vehicles, take away a lot of bells and whistles and they would be less appealing to families, but no idea how that could be made to happen.

As an owner of a pick up truck, figured I would stick my hand up.

I live on a farm, so it is used for its intended purpose, of which it is unmatched in it's ability.

The tax break thing is really not an easy thing to solve. Pick up trucks are classed technically as vans, and have historically been used by builders and farmers to cart 1 tonne loads around, as they are really useful to do this.

There seems to be two ways to remove the tax break;

1. Reclassify pickup trucks as non commerical vehicles, but that means that there are plenty of legitimate users who will then get taxed who shouldn't be.
   
2. Somehow check that the people driving the vehicle are using it for a legitimate reason, but who is going to set what a legit reason is and then police it?

No one can ever find out farm, postcode takes you to a farm 3 miles down the road, which they literally have to drive past our entrance. Put up a fair sized sign, doesn’t help at all. Even added our farm to Google maps in case people look at that…
