I do almost 30 a day on 48/19 and it's fine.
Mainly flat route, with one hill on the way home, which I slug it up. Sometimes, for training, I go other routes that have hills and it's no bother.
When deciding whether to go fixed, I just selected a suitable gear on my geared bike and did my commute on that gear only. I did that a few times and fact that it was easily doable. So I bought a Fuji Track and have never looked back.

Thanks to VinylVillain for posting entire American Flyers movie. Just watched it and was great to see Mount Evans at the end. I rode it a week ago on Friday and it is an amazing climb.
Where they finished in the film is now only halfway from where we started. After that is another 14 mile climb. 29 miles climb and 8000 ft in elevation in total.
It certainly puts the North Downs, Surrey Hills and the Ditchling into perspective.

You'll be fine. It's a great ride with a fantastic destination to keep your spirits up. Weather looks good on Sat.
When I first did it, I met my mate at Croydon and his 'hybrid' turned out to be a tank of a bike! We took our sweet time, had lunch on top of Turners Hill for an hour, eventually arriving in Brighton with no issues and big smiles.

Bit of a bad day. Got to work to find that they have decided to restrict the bike parking policy with no prior notice. Growl growl.
But then, on her 2nd day of commmuting, me big sis comes up with this analysis of other bike users:
[SIZE=2]I've graded them - Grade 1, don't give a shit about no one on the roads, jump red lights, and leave a trail of testotorone behind for other cyclists. Grade 2 - feel challenged by testorone man, but does stop at traffic lights and pretty much obeys traffic signals, isn't going so fast so checks out chicks on bikes whilst cycling along. Grade 3 is fat bloke who has to take over cycling chick even if it kills him so grade 1s and 2s can't take the piss out of him !!!!!
That made my day.
But she obviously saw no fixed riders....just nodders!

A bit of fun from the Jungle Brothers that sticks in my mind from me yuff..
Baby, baby, baby
I know I drive you crazy
MC's know me as Mike G
Girls hold on to me tightly
Warm personality
That's why they get close to me
Try their best to drive me wild
Say they want to bear my child
I go away, they say, Come back
Why?....
Because I got it like that! -
Yesterday two nice things happened to me:
1) Roundabout in Bexleyheath. A driver, who had right of way, acknowledged me with a wave to say sorry for being a bit slow and holding me up.
2) Roundabout in Plumstead. A van driver, again with right of way, actually slowed down and flashed me onto the roundabout. He could see that, if he continued, it would interrupt my momentum.I was in shock!
Then left hand bend in Greenwich, flashy GTO cut me up. Normal service resumed....phew! :-)
