Cable pull is dictated by the shifter, provided this matches your cassette spacing there shouldn't be too many problems. If you get a modern 7-speed freewheel you can use either a 7 or 8 speed shifter - the spacing is the same.
I'd avoid Shadow as it uses a longer cable pull, stick with a 9-speed chain and derailleur. Chances are it won't be as smooth as a matching drivetrain but should work fine. At the worst you could put in longer limit screws, but you probably won't have to. You'll most likely need a long-cage derailleur with that cassette if you're planning on anything but a single ring setup too.

I believe both 7 or 8 speed shifters should work with a 7 speed cassette. Shimano preferred, but again, I think the spacing is the same through most/all manufacturers at this point.
Only need the right hand as I'm planning a 1 X 7 speed drive-train, but if you've got a pair at a good price I'd be interested too.
Thanks!

It is hard to find bikes in the smaller sizes. After something not too racey, preferably with room for mudguards and panniers (as it'll be used for commuting too) and either a triple chainset or compact gearing.
Budget is up to around £300. Will consider bikes from all ages: modern or classic.
Thanks!

Ready for winter. Hammerited black (the frame was starting to rust up) and all sorts of bits which shouldn't be attached to a track frame, attached. Need a new crankset.

New wheels and a cassette with an extra cog and closer ratios to match my current location. Nice to not have massive gaps.

New wheels and new bars. Strangely I prefer deeper drops on a cross bike. I don't tend to use the drops apart from into stiff headwinds so the deeper the better.

If you look at the image URL, take the first part of the image name (the numbers before the underscore) and put it on the end of http://flickr.com/photo.gne?id= it'll take you to the photo and user page on flickr, from which you can find more photos!

It doesn't work on all saddles - SLRs and Flites are suitable, I don't know about anything else. I find my Flite just as comfortable without the leather and foam; it doesn't soak up water and they can be found alot cheaper if the leather is scuffed and/or ripped up.

Anyone have any experience making imitation bar mitts?

I suffer from cold hands in the winter and this would appear to be an alternative to massive gloves. I reckon just a layer of neoprene then fleece in a cone shape with a hole in the end and maybe a little elastic to seal to the bars (though wind flow shouldn't be too strong here). What purpose does the zip fulfill? Ventilation maybe?

why not?
