OK, so having recently been bereaved of my Surly (sniff), I am starting to think about the Next Big Thing, and have decided that, since I was always going to drop a grand or two on a top-notch custom-built frame at some point, it might as well be this point.
But how on earth does one decide which framebuilder to go for? At the moment I'm erring towards Mercian, but this is on the fairly flimsy basis of a couple of 5-minute test rides on other people's bikes, lots of positive testimonials, and (ahem) the fact that they're really really pretty.
But it seems ridiculous to make such a huge commitment without really knowing what I'm talking about. Shouldn't I at least try and ride a couple of hundred miles on several different frames before I make my decision? Or do I just need to learn all about the mechanics of frame-building, in order to make sure they'll be providing me with exactly the sort of ride I'm after?
Seriously, how do you know?

Richmond Park (of course!) is excellent if you want to make a day of it, and have a picnic or a pub lunch or something. And what about riding along the river to Windsor?
I think the trick is to make a date of it - include treats and incentives, keep complimenting her on how well she's doing (and how good she looks in her lycra), and go out somewhere swanky for overpriced pasta afterwards.
You might find you actually enjoy it. I took a very wobbly friend for a spin round Richmond Park a few months ago, and found I used all sorts of different muscles riding slowly for a change.

If you want to give her a present, I'd recommend a session or two with this chap. He's very very patient and reassuring, and I've heard he works wonders with nervous cyclists. I think even just having had a bit of 'official training' will make the world of difference to someone's confidence.
And if she wants a bit more experience of riding away from busy roads, Brian Wright at Hillingdon
track does ladies' sessions on a Friday afternoon (about 1-4) which are very easygoing. (Most people there start off unable to ride a bike - some are now up to racing standard, others are still wobbling around on MTBs, so there's a huge mix of abilities.)Oh, and introduce her to some of the girly retailers, like Minx and CycleChic. She may end up doing more miles just to justify some bling new kit. (When I first started commuting, I decided to spend all the money I was saving on travel cards on pretty lycra. That was fun.)

willo, if only i knew what your thighs looked like!!!!! i don't know about the experts but i think you need to be aiming for 70 gear inches. there are others on here who know more about it than me. I ride a 42 x 16 and i wouldn't like to go any higher on that front ring but then i've got girl's legs. (clintsmoker speaking not jonny who can turn a more powerful ratio)
Oh really...? resists temptation to post picture of own legs
Count me in for the 30th! Wish I could make the 16th too, but I have a prior engagement with Ditchling Beacon.

Ooh - yes, I've done loads of these in the past! (Wish you hadn't told me there was one this Friday - my deadline isn't till Monday.)
But for now I'm thinking just of off-the-cuff jaunts round London. If anyone finds themselves at a loose end at about 9.30 tonight, post on this thread and let's meet somewhere improbable...

Most of my riding seems to happen between 10pm and 1am these days. (I'm slaving over a hot thesis all day, and just know I won't get to sleep unless I go out and stretch my legs first.) It's a glorious time to be out - nice and quiet, hardly anyone else on the roads - so give me a shout if anyone wants to come out and join me. There's so much fun to be had in London late at night - it upsets me that no one seems to be having it!

Thanks. I picked it up intending to use it as a hack-bike-about-town (was going to upgrade the Surly to be my long-distance inter-city bike) but now it looks like it's going to be my main bike for a while. But it's actually a really nice ride!
(That's weird - how come the quote says something different from your original post?)
