Never seen this film. Is it based on the manuscript found at saragossa by Jan Potocki? if so I'm gonna have to track it down, the book's a fantastic yarn of gypsies, princesses, knights, and a wandering jew. brilliant.

Really? I thought it was a huge slice of the 80s that hadn't been looked at in film, lovely subtle touches, amazingly humane and well scripted. it felt as authentic 1980s as you could get. Not his best but his most critically acclaimed - but then how often do they go hand in hand?
Don't get me wrong, I was really excited to see it as, like you say, it's a cultural movement (skinheads) that's been well overlooked aside from NF bigotry, but I thought the development of the narrative was painfully obvious and didn't do justice to the theme...
I think what happened is I managed to step out of the nostalgic element and the magic vanished...
