So sizing: I have the previous club jersey in L and it's a little bit loose (especially on my pipe-cleaner arms), but a good length. These will be the pro cut, correct? Should I size down or stick with L? 6'5 and about 82 kg for reference.

http://www.fifteensquared.net/ is a good resource. It gives fairly detailed explanations of the solutions for many of the main cryptic puzzles (e.g. Guardian, Indy, etc.) and they manage to get them up impressively quickly each day too.

Indeed. My abortive effort included something like 17 punctures (running tubed Grifos - 33s I think, for reference). No doubt some were user error in a rush to get back on the trail and perhaps not inflating enough.
Thoroughly enjoyable day nonetheless.

Yep - portability. He (and we) wouldn't want all his computing to be in his room.

So I guess in an ideal world it would be closer to the £500 mark than the £800 or so that the Omen is at in John Lewis, hence thinking maybe of the 2nd hand/refurb route. But I have no experience of that and would be wary unless I can get reassurance of reliable places to look.

So if you could get a discount on a new one then that might swing the balance. Thanks very much for the reply.

I've promised my son I'd help research best options for him to buy a gaming laptop. Since I know next to nothing on the subject, I hope you'll be kind enough to help.

He's 13 and been working hard (running a bike repair business!) to save up.

From our initial trip to the shops at the weekend, advice seems to be to aim for an i7 and a dedicated graphics card. He's fallen for the looks of the HP Omen

Would that be a good'un? What could he get for a similar budget that would be better?

That's really stretching his budget though, so should he be looking second-hand/refurbished - in which case where is reliable?
