I was reading something the other day that I think you might be interested in. It's a collection of papers discussing neolithic visual expression across Europe. There's a particularly interesting essay by Gillian Varndell titled "The Grimes Graves Goddess: An Inscrutable Smile". It explores the possibility that the Grimes Graves Goddess was carved by the sculptor wife of the lead archaeologist. There isn't really a precedent, in the UK, for this kind of chalk figure. Especially not outside of Scotland. Hence Varndell's scepticism.
Whilst she makes a compelling argument, I think that a Goddess figure of this style, and age, may indeed have a precedent. Look at the chalk head found in the Thames near Battersea: similar age and it certainly appears to bear a vague resemblance to the Grimes Graves Goddess. Hmmmmm.
