maybe you've already stripped it a bit?
Have you tried taking off the sprocket and lockring and inspecting the hub and seeing if there's any damage?
I stripped a hub once and slivers of metal came off the inside of the sprocket when I took it off.

Does anyone have a Campagnolo 46t 144bcd chainring that they want to swap for a Royce 52t or a campy 42t? Mine are used but in good condition.
