my last lady wasnt a cyclophobe, but she hated it that i would fuck off all day, come home and eat for hours, and then tinker with my bike/read stuff on the net about bikes for the rest of the evening. and that was when i didnt go for long rides and stay with mate for the night to continue riding the next day. and bikes are only one of my interests, it was a classic: "your interests are more important than me" scenario.
i once made the mistake of suggesting she come ride with me, or get a hobby of her own to fill the time im not pandering to her entertainment. this didnt go down well as she seemed to think that i was suggesting she was lazy and didnt do anything. which in reality was true. it really pissed me off that she wanted me to forfeit a hobby im passionate about becuase she was at home bored, becuase when im bored i find somthing fun to do.
it obviously wasnt working so i left her. now im single i spend all my time doing whatever makes me happy and working the rest. unless i find a woman who has her own things going on and doesnt need me to be with her all of the time im probably going to stay single, cause im not putting up with that shit again. do miss the sexy times though.

for a while now ive wanted to ride some offroad jive, but i just dont get on with traditional mountain bikes. much to my suprise and joy i discovered cyclocross! i set my crappy old SS up with some 35C schwalbe CX tyres and gave it a spin. it was great, but now i want an SS bike built for the purpose. im not particually rich so lower end, but good quality parts are the name of the game.
ive basically fallen in love with this:

what are your recommendations:
frame: as much i like the look of steel and traditional geometry, i dont want a bike im routeinly getting dirty, wet, and being washed with a hosepipe rusting to death. but yet still want somthing atractive and with a horizontal TT. should i be more realistic?
brakes: the choice has got to be between V-brakes and the avid BB disks. i like the BB disks but from my limited experience i couldnt say if they are really any better than V-brakes. are they worth the effort or should i stick with good quality Vee's?
wheels: without going mad with money what are the best (strength + lightweight) rim/hub, and spoke pattern combinations for dirty offroading? do people use standard road wheels cause i have a bunch sitting around.
gear ratio: im at home on 70" on the road, but this was clearly far too high when i tried my SS, and it wasnt even muddy. what do we reckon?
im new to this jazz and ill proably have more questions, thanks for anything you can add

i actually rather like how complicated it looks, and im all about CNC stuff at the moment so to me this is just porn. i respect the craftsmanship. i actually reckon it works really well, and it is fully adustable so itl fit whatever wheel you like.
with that said ill porbably never have one, its purely a bling componant. im very happy with standard brakes and i dont think my riding experience would improve with fancier brakes. i also like the M5 single pivot!
that Manitou is fucking amazing.

nah still dont get it. never been a problem with my road drops, but then again i do have thin girlish arms and i dont race on the track.
surely your arms should be more level to lower your body when seated, so not touching the tops. or bent out far wide of the bar when out of the saddle. i really dont see what problem this solves.

im quite disapointed that VP's pictures dont have amazing planet crushing thighs in them. her legs are far more normal than i expected. this is a shame: a) shes a world champion bike rider and im a bike geek b) there are lots of women with normal legs c) if theyre airbrushed it means shes not comfortable with having muscle bound legs. this is under the asumption its airbrushed, which i can only expect from FHM.
gender politics are complictaed, but i think we should all really just get over it. regardless of gender we are all just people, and i think there are many things that make us individual outside of our physicality. we should all do what we want and feel makes us happy, its the fools that do what they feel they should. VP got paid and did these photos, as well as other previous terrible shoots out of her own choice. if you do photos for FHM, of all magazines, what are you expecting to get from it. she obviously wants blokes to find her attractive.
im not adverse to pictures of women, but then again i happen to find find women attractive. ive always quite fancied VP from my television, shes an amazing track racer (which i highly respect) and of the type of woman i tend to find attractive. but then its all ruined when i see her in interviews and hear her talk, where i think shes a bit of an idiot.

i like what youve done there scott, the bag looks great, amazing colour match. TBH i think i would have just used road drops and a more standard saddle bag.
nice idea witht the bar ends in the middle, ive not seen that before, can you show a pic with you using them, i cant really imagine the position of your arms. normal aero bars have the arm rest, so im confused as to how your arms can be confortable like that.

im of the opinion that weed and shrooms are fairly harmless. the worst that can happen with weed is that itl make you lazy and fat, and shrooms might make you hurl if you eat too many. i think the whole schizophrenia thing is people who didnt know they already had it, and was then amplified by being stoned. of course its not possible that i have problems, it must be the weed.
ive seen plenty of people who have ripped massive bongs and had mild panic attacks, becuase theyre heart was beating so fast and they thought somthing was terribly wrong. this is just people who dont smoke much not being used to the sensation, they then worry and panic about it which makes them feel even worse. just chill and youl find it a quite nice feeling.
with that said i wouldnt legalise shrooms becuase i dont want lots of tripping people about on them, its better kept within private areas. tripping people can be a massive pain in the arse.
id legalise weed, but nothing else. all the other drugs i dont really like and can only turn people into idiots. they are also much more open to dangerous missuse. its very difficult to smoke "too much" weed, becuase at some point youl just nod off and have a relaxing sleep.
i think this whole campange is lame to be honest, while there are nice people who take drugs, that doesnt mean that it ok. its a very ham fisted attempt to deal with the situaton. i dont want to see a country where all drugs are acceptable, i think they should just be realistic about how illegal/dangerous they really are.
-
bloody hell, i dont know how you guys can do this jive. i didnt realise audaxs were this ridiculous. 600 odd miles with barely any sleep would be enough for me to go crazy, i could ride the distance as long as i got some decent sleep in a bed between stages.
on fixed is even more mad, you dont even get rest on the descents!

yeah so is mine. i dont see any problems with them, they arnt going to break, they dont need lubing, they arnt going to wear anywhere near as much. yes you need mods or a new bike, but just get a new bike or dont have a belt drive.
i dont think they have much over chains as none of these problems really apply to any chain bike ive had. but they are lighter and a bit fancy. they probably will be alot more money though which is more likely to put me off more than anything else.

i tired adjusting the barrel and feeling for movement when shifting.
when i move the big lever i can feel some movement in the cable. from this it seems to have reset the small lever back to normal position, but pressing it has no effect. when i press the small level i can feel that it is about to click, but i dont want to as im clearly using too much force to do so.
it seems like there might be life left in it yet.
what do we reckon? i dont want to do to much, but if i can easily fix it i will.
-
hmm, so i can i get it done at a local LBS and get evens to pay for it, even if it isnt an evans store? this sounds too good to be true to be honest. it wasnt bought through C2W.
if i remove the cable from the anchor bolt to get it back to the small ring (more ridable in the meantime) is this going to void my warrenty?

i dont really understand why you carry so much stuff. i have a bottle in a cage, a pump+multitool on the frame and a spare tube+levers under the saddle. locks if i need them go in the back of my belt, or a cable around my neck. if i need to carry anything else it goes in my pockets or i put the saddle bag on. this time of year its too hot to wear a jacket even if its raining, id rather just get wet.
if i have a problem that requires anymore tools its probably serious, and time to find a way home that doesnt involve riding. i cant stand riding with anything on my back, ive never really understood the whole messenegr bag jive, the thought of a massive bag covering my back seems silly when i can just get a nice set of panniers or a saddlebag. i can see the use if your actually a curryer but otherwise i dont get it.
with this said it is very likely i use my bike diffrently to you. i dont lock my bike in public areas, i have quick releases on all my bikes (even on the fixed!) and i dont use it to commute to a job where appearance is important.
