I ridden months on a geared racer without a fully functioning rear brake. Whether it is dangerous or not is debatable. However when the front brake cable goes you won't be putting your feet on the floor when rolling (v.slowly) down hills.

I don't see how you can be comfortable hurtling down box hill or the like with only a front brake. If the hill has any type of cornering it will be even worse.

I suppose I'll give using less spacers and squeezing frame a go. Not sure whether the tension that creates on the nuts, i.e. pushing them outwards, would help my cause though.

won't matter at all, will be insignificant compared to the load from tightening them against the dropouts.

How tall are the nuts?, I would probably take the 2mm spacers out and squeeze the frame as you suggested.

I think the estate was quite bad a few years ago but it's not bad now.

New stem, old one was 90 degrees and looked a little skonky + resulted in a little too upright riding position.

I am STILL looking for a longer seatpost - the one on is a 200mm shimano 600 aero one. I could really do with just 10-20mm longer which is annoying. Is anyone willing to swap for mine + £ if they are not using the whole seatpost? Looking for something similar.
