Forget foo! Forget interconnects, green felt tip on your CDs and oak cones under your CDP. They may have minor effects For real improvements, read up on stuff, try to understand some of the science (there's a lot of it - and I don't pretend to understand 10%) and - most importantly - experiment and listen. I've been modding a dirt cheap Marantz CDP. Amongst other things, I replaced the crappy opamp output stage with a simple tube one, like this guy (warning, this guy is nuts and his site can cause you to start relentlessly purchasing crap old CDPs, which are another thing for the other half to moan about as well as bikes).

The bloody thing is ugly as sin but sounds brilliant, and I'm not done yet. Since I started reading this guy's stuff, and really listening to my hifi, and thinking about how it works, some of my more expensive gear has gone. I'm spending peanuts and just enjoying listening.

I met Boris randomly the other day, as we were both cycling through Monument. He ignored a bunch of nodders and bent my ear about "these bikes with one gear", basically asking what's the point. I had a bit of a star-struck mind-blank to be honest - briefly considered wheeling out Desgrange - hastily discarded that idea, and just said they felt good. As we went our seperate ways he waved me off in a very friendly fashion - top guy.

The best thing about the magic gearing, is that once you found the perfect combination to get a good tension, you won't ever need to tighten your chain again when it go slack.
Speakin from some experience, I'd say it don't quite work like that. If you've got absolutely zero scope for movement in the dropouts you' won't get consistently good chain tension with a magic gear. My vertical dropout frame enabled a little back and forth, no more than half a mill, but enough to help. Its still a lot of effing about, and a much better long term solution is an eccentric hub, which is what I went for.

Ha. I have loads, and one cunningly wormed its way back into my spare tube pouch in the bag, much to my feckin annoyance when I flatted and had to fix in a pissy doorway at old street last night, sweating cobs and becoming later by the second.... ....was not impressed when I heard that little *pffffft...... *
