You should use those workouts sparingly though because if you are competing or doing other training you will quickly find yourself knackered from the empty-stomach riding.
Anyway I ride on empty in the mornings and eat like a fucking pig later hence being a fat cunt. So the system is flawed.. nyer :P
I did it 6 times a week, walking on an treadmill at 12 degree incline watching the telly at the gym. I got a few weird looks from fellow gym monkeys like - yer, that's doing anything. But it worked well.
If you ride on an empty stomach in the morning and you're caning it maybe you're burning muscle for fuel and leaving the flabby bits behind! Add pies to the mix... hmm. :P
I took weight loss all too seriously about 2 years ago and was stoked with the results. 6 pack, striations in my shoulders, but it was not fun. With anything not fun, doing it for extended periods of time sucks donkey balls so I gave up. I'm going to just ride till I sweat and try and keep off the pies for a bit and hope I lose a bit of flab. I'm 6' and 82kg so not fat by any stretch but my moobs are starting to come back, gotta get rid of em!

Above the table you linked to is this comment: "The body does burn a higher percentage of calories from fat in the 'fat burning zone' or at lower intensities. But, at higher intensities, you burn a greater number of overall calories which is what you should be concerned about when trying to lose weight." which is exactly what I said.
The reason gyms have tables with Fat Burning Zones is because they do what the public want and make it all nice and easy to burn fat, laadeedah, here you go sir just plod along in this zone and you will be burning more fat..
They don't bother explaining that burning more calories overall at 80% HRmax is better because the public 1) don't want it any harder and 2) this fat burning zone thing is a fairly well published mistake.
I thought the same thing a few years ago but I've read enough physiology/training books to know better now and when I spot a chance to dispel the myths I do it.If the guy (I wish he had a shorter name so I'd actually type it!) was previously a cyclist then he should be able to start off with a week or two of easy 60% stuff and then he should look at whacking in some 80% efforts and see how they go. It will get results quicker (if it doesn't kill him ;)).
Sorry to get the thread back onto weight loss, but I did LISS (low intensity steady state) cardio and ended up losing 18kg. Granted it was not just the cardio but a strict diet and weight lifting program as well.
It's been debated ad infinitum on the 'net (just do a search: LISS vs HITT) but what I found is that if you do LISS cardio (45-50mins @ 70% MHR) on an empty stomach first thing in the morning the fat just shed really quickly. The theory behind it being first thing in the morning with nothing in your gut the only thing you're going to burn is fat. You have to keep it in the aerobic zone otherwise you'll eat up muscle as it's more readily available to your body than fat. Anything anaerobic (75% MHR+) you're going to need fuel or it's bye bye muscle.
With HITT or anaerobic exercise you get the benefit of a raised metabolism throughout the day though but whilst you burn more overall calories, you can't do it on an empty stomach.
Those fat burning zones in the gym are correct, but eating a pork pie and then doing a 20 min walk on an inclined treadmill isnt going to do shit.
I dunno, maybe what I have just wrote it complete bollocks but it worked for me. The shit thing is I have given it up and put 10kg back on.

I don't like the Police today.
Earlier on I saw a copper in his police car turning west on Whitechapel rd from Cambridge Heath sending a bloody **text message!
**I went through a red today (the green mans were on), looked right, looked left - oops - cop van. The guy behind the wheel just shook his head and didn't chase me. sweet.

Just cycled into central in the rain, lovely.
I can't help but wish that considering all of this rain is coming in on an easterly weather fount it would have been really cool if it had happened three months ago, we could have had some serious snow!
Same, rode home in the rain today, was nice and cool although I got totally saturated.
why did i even think it would not rain today
Ya, at about 11-12 it was sunshine. 2 hours later it's pissing it down.

Aroogah, that's the one. Met Luke at the starbucks and handed over the dosh!
PJ, I didn't encounter any of that on my ride home but I do remember riding around on my mountain bike last year and encountering some absolute tools on the road. Came off the bike a couple of times. I was just stoked I didn't encounter any today, made for a nice ride home. :)
edscoble, ya, going to take it really easy for the next couple of weeks and get a ton of practise doing laps in Victoria park.
the brick: LOL!!! If I rode trouserless I think people would be blinded by the full moon.

Hars, thats an extremely well described first experience. I think many will be tempted from singlespeed to fixed, just on your say-so. Personally, I need a gallon off scotch to make me do it, but you make it seem a doddle.
I did find it quite easy to get used to for some reason. The first 10 mins of the ride were pretty hairy but after that it just felt kinda natural to keep pedalling.
I do need way more time practising stopping though. I was initiating the stop (up to a red light for example) a LONG time before I got there, trying as much as possible to scrub as much speed off with my feet. Tomorrow in the park I am going to attempt a couple of emergency stops and see how that goes.

I'm diggin it!
I bought the black Coppi off Luke today at lunch and rode it home from the west end to Bow. A few notes over budget but it's absolutely what I have been looking for in terms of look so I'm in overdraft for a bit. :)
First impressions:
fuck it's fast. I mean really. Soooo much different to my old mountain bike. I picked it up and got such a surprise at how light it was. What was quite funny I reckon was overtaking most other bikes on the road without much effort. Once you get the speed and momentum up it kinda sticks and you can power on through.
it was a bit strange at first with my first instinct to coast but I just kept saying in my head "pedal, pedal, pedal" the whole ride home and by the end of it I was pretty used to it. Bus swerved in front of me: "pedal pedal pedal". Black tin can uturner pulling out: "pedal pedal pedal".
it's taxing as hell. I had to stop for a bottle of water half way through the ride drenched in sweat. hehe. I brought the bike into the shop with me which pissed off the dude behind the counter but with no lock there was no way it was leaving my grasp.
I did strike my pedal on the curb once but was going so slow it was a non issue, freaked me out a little bit and I'm glad it happened because now I am a lot more aware of it.
Stopping was interesting. It has a front brake which I don't intend to take off but pedalling and stopping was a pretty weird experience. I did try as much as possible to at least slow down using my feet and that seemed to work pretty well. Haven't tried a skid yet, will leave that for the park tomorrow.
There were some surprisingly courteous drivers on the road today (must be the brief bit of sun?). They were letting me in and keeping their distance when I was overtaking busses etc which was cool. I'm sure that will change though.
All in all, I'm really stoked!!!!!

The brake on my bike is shite so on the market for a new one. Anyone have anything half decent? The campy veloce look pretty nice but come as a set and I don't need a rear.
Would a bike shop be willing to seperate them? If so I may just buy one new.
