I was actually thinking the same thing after I posted my pseudo failure analysis, the gap probably closed when it snapped! Also you say you've done thousands of miles on it so fatigue has probably played a part in it as well.
At least you could replace the part without having to replace the whole thing!

when installed correctly, it'll stand the test of time.
i.e. a poorly fitted Chris King headset won't despite being a 'fit and forget' headset.
I concur, it looks like it wasn't attached completely evenly, it's right up against it at the top so I imagine there will be a healthy gap at the bottom (can't tell from the photo however) when there should be a gap at the top and bottom (I imagine, as this is how my stem looks when attached)
The fact it cracked there isn't completely surprising as this is the section with the smallest cross section and therefore the weakest so with Rod yanking away at the bars this is the section that will suffer the most and eventually ping, especially when it hasn't got as much flexibility to spread the stress due to the clamp being right against the stem at the top. Does that make sense, bit tired at the mo!
Although the fact that you can get Thomson clamps also brings into question the quality of the clamp to start with!

Went on a supported ride for my first cycling holiday (they organised hostels and moved bags etc), this was also my first experience of cycling and kind of distance and what got me into cycling. We did about 170 miles in 4 days of cycling I think! There are no hilly areas to speak of, the only hills you will get are the humps on bridges, the biggest thing to contend with will be the wind. 350 miles in 2 weeks will be pretty easy going, I expect you are planning on stopping off in places for a few days at a time. The bike you take probably depends on a couple of things, such as what bikes do you have at your disposal? and what will you be carrying? I reckon you could do it on a single speed with a flip flop hub as it is nice and flat, changing for windy days. How do you plan to carry your stuff?

GA2G, I already have a pic of bird footprints in the snow for the competition but I might swap it out for this one as a wolf paw print is also pretty cool, loving this phone for taking pics tho, seems pretty easy to get good results!

If you're wheels need renewing then that might be an idea but if you just need a new freehub then you can take CEYA up on their offer or get one of these very good quality freewheel, got one for my Bro's Vitus a few years ago, not done many miles but it works a treat. Or depending on the gearing you want they also do shimano and sunrace freewheels for cheaper!
