Hi, hope this is something someone will be able to help me with, my sister has just talked to me about getting into cycling, she is soon to be moving to Bury St Edmunds with work only around 2 miles away and thought a cycle to work would by just lovely, unfortunately she is not terribly confident on a bike and is having trouble looking out cycle lessons. I would take her out for a spin but am based in Aberdeenshire so isn't terribly convenient, plus I'm in no way qualified (also I remember teaching her to drive, I don't think she enjoyed my instruction).
I'm basically looking for recommendations for cycle lessons around the Cambridgeshire area to improve her confidence on the roads, and also so she can get a better idea of what bike to buy, she has shown interest in a Pendleton Somerby which she had a try on at Halfords the other day!
Any help would be gratefully received.

Was nearly choked with laughter/tears at work, brilliant! Amazing how someone's utter, debilitating embarrassment can bring so much light to someone else's life! The aftermath must have been truly epic, turbulance, plus the voilent aroma wafting round the cabin, your man whimpering a muffled sorry to everyone and no-one and then the sound of rustling sick bags as the first person loses their lunch.
-
-
That is pretty shit man, my stomach would sink through the floor if that happened to me, absolutely gutting. One thing you could do, get incident number, go on trip anyway, buy new clothes and bag, cheap charger for phone and hope some kind of insurance will cover your loss, get a bin bag for a waterproof gilet. Saturday and Sunday look like they could be dry, Friday is wet (no idea where you are planning on cycling, just looked at london and cornwall) It would be a shame to miss out on your trip because of some arsehole robbing your bag!

Tesla are already trying to tackle this problem, they have a car with a range circa 200 miles and at the same time are installing superchargers across the country which can get your car to 80% in 45 mins or so, I think this kind of innovation should put paid to range anxiety. As a small city run around the current crop of Nissan Leafs and Chevrolet Volt are brilliant so completely agree with you on that point, big car for long journeys, small car for bimbling about.

I think this topic probably needs it's own thread but you are correct, the technology is constantly improving and we are moving towards a point where E Cars are becoming more and more economically viable, the challange at the moment I believe is producing enough batteries which is why companies like Tesla are creating their Giga factory. If you are into electric cars the 'Fully Charged' channel on youtube has some informative and entertaining videos on the subject.

A little ditty explaining how electric cars may not actually create more pollution through increased output from powerplants, I've not fact checked this or anything as I'm far too lazy but this is the source.

Evans - Right to Reply, names changed because, internets...
Dear Mr Carey,
Thank you for your email.
I am sorry that you have been disappointed with the customer service
at the Aberdeen branch of Evans Cycles. Please be assured that customer satisfaction is of primary concern at
Evans Cycles and I have discussed the issues that you raised in your
email with Mr Jonny McCoy, the manager at this branch/ of the
management team at this branch. Mr McCoy sincerely regrets that your
expectations have not been met on this occasion.Regrettably, the item that you required was a non-stock item that is
not available to purchase as part of the range of products that Evans
Cycles supplies. Although the item was available as a workshop spare,
this is for the use of mechanics during the course of their work and
for servicing, repairs and bike building. I understand that two
members of staff were initially willing to supply the part, but as it
does not have a product code, it could not be entered through the till
system which is linked to head office. The store teams are not
permitted to make ad-hoc sales in this way, and so regrettably it
meant that they were then unable to allow you to take the item. As the
store is relatively new, some of the workshop staff are unfamiliar
with this process. This matter will of course be high-lighted in the
store team’s next staff training session. Mr McCoy is of course sorry
that this caused you disappointment. The outcome of this is that you have been left very frustrated and
dissatisfied which is not the impression we want customers to leave
with and which we unreservedly and sincerely regret. In recognition of
this, I have generated and sent an e-gift voucher to the value of
£25.00. This may be redeemed online on the website, or by using the
telephone mail order facility or by printing out the email and taking
it to any branch of Evans Cycles. It has a two year period of
validity. Please note that when we send this, you will receive three
emails; the first two are confirmation and shipping emails, and then a
third email follows with the value, voucher code and pin number.I realise that this experience has caused you to become disillusioned
with Evans Cycles as a whole and I sincerely regret this. I hope you
will appreciate that it is certainly not our intention to disappoint
our customers and you may be assured that your custom is valued; I
would like to assure you that customer service undergoes constant
review in order to ensure that our customers' experience remain
consistently high.I am grateful that you brought this matter to our attention since it
enables Evans Cycles to improve the service that we offer. I would
also like to assure you at this juncture that this is not indicative
of the normal level of service provided at this branch - or indeed any
other branch of Evans Cycles. On behalf of Evans Cycles, please accept my apologies for the
disappointment you have been caused.I hope that you will give Evans Cycles the opportunity to restore your
faith and I hope that you will continue to enjoy cycling.Yours sincerely,
Rachael Welsh

TLDR - Customer service acknowledge I was a bit miffed, gave me £25 voucher, I am a happier bunny, that is for sure! have replied to this saying they should be allowed to sell workshop stock and should add on a mark up for profits!

Yup, possibly one of the least obscure parts seeing as almost all bikes will require them, gawd! Every other bike shop I have ever used, whilst in Edinburgh, London or Aberdeen has been more than accommodating for such requests. Och well, have had a reply from customer service saying it's been sent on top customer service, will probably post on here what ever the reply is!

A letter I have just written to evans customer service, bloody jobsworth!
Dear Sir or Madam of the Customer service team,
Yesterday I was building up my new mountain bike and found the gear
cable inner I had lying around wasn't long enough, instead of buying
online or waiting for the weekend to visit my LBS I thought I would
use your new store in Aberdeen on the Great Northern Road. So off I
pop on my lunch break, I managed to find the brake cable inner but no
gear cable inner so asked a young chap who professed it to be his
first day so asked the chap behind the workshop counter, all so far,
very helpful, very nice. The guy in the workshop looked to see if
there was stuff in retail packaging but there was not so went on to
get some from the workshop, trying his very best to fulfil my request!
In the meantime whilst he was wrapping it up and what not I decided to
get a tyre patch kit whilst I was there as I was enjoying the whole
retail experience (as much as you can when buying gear cable) and
appreciated the effort from the workshop chappy. The problem came
when it got to paying, along comes a slightly older, hairier, broader
guy who I can only assume is the manager, he too, looked for the
retail packaged stuff and offered me a gear cable kit, I informed him
"I just need the cable" to which he said, in a slightly condescending
manner "well, if you need the inner it's likely you need a new outer
as well" I informed our hairy chum that I had new outer. he then
wen't on to inform me that he couldn't sell me the workshop stuff as
he had got in trouble from head office or something to that effect, I
left the store with no cable and no puncture repair kit (as my retail
experience had fallen off a cliff after speaking you this chap) and
slightly peeved. Whether he can't sell workshop stock or not doesn't
matter, I would expect a store to try and fulfill a customer request
if at all possible and to make them feel valued, there was no offer of
ordering some in or any other useful suggestions, they didn't even
point me in the direction of your website, all things that would have
shown that they cared, just "this is all we've got"!At the end of the day i was after gear cable inner, Evans had some,
waved it in my face and said no, feel a bit of chump for wasting my
lunch break, even more after checking the website and seeing that gear
cable is in stock in the Aberdeen store but after speaking with 3
separate people at your store I wasn't able to purchase any. I know
it's just a £3 item I wasn't able to purchase but it really is the
small things that make the difference and I'm afraid you're store in
Aberdeen was left wanting.Kind regards
Bernard Myles Carey
TLDR - Needed gear cable inner, evans only had it in the workshop, jobsworth manager wouldn't sell it to me, flounce!
