Round two, the spreadsheet takes over. Based on the scores of the first round, the teams are matched up with teams of most equal ability. For example, teams that won their first game, teams that lost their first game, teams with close goal differences. This continues for 6 rounds.
Can you give a precise definition of how to match up teams in round 2 and beyond?

Ok.
What's the problem with Array formulas then?
(Pivot tables do it better? I couldn't get a Pivot table to give me the median of the answer I wanted - it's not a supported function. What would have been better? I'm working with Bill Jelen books here, if there's better more efficient stuff I'd be happy to know)sits back, waits for more dunce cap handing out, red cheeks of shame and generally remembering what school was like
Use the "median()" function?

That code assumes that when you're talking about "fixed values A and B", they are in the same row as the value in col AM, in cols A and B. You can just replace those with integers if you prefer.
The reason for the 2nd nested "IF" is so that if AM1 contains something other than "outdoor" or "indoor", you will be able to catch it.

Yeah sure, I can write the queries without too much bother.
How are you planning to access the DB? You could get someone to write you an android front end and access it from your phone at the polo court. Maybe it would make sense to develop it as an android solution? I don't really know anything about software development.
But yeah, I can write the queries, give me a shout when you're set.
