assuming you have 170mm cranks and 700x23 wheels, a 52t chainring will give you:

19t - 72 GI
20t - 68 GI
21t - 65 GI
22t - 62 GI

Aim for around 65-68 gear inches if it's your first time. Check out Sheldon Brown's website for details on what cog that equates to with your chainring and crank length.
