wonderful afternoon and evening, so great to see people i hadn't seen in a good while. seem to have had longer and better chats with more people than i can remember at any other forum get together and it really showed how cracking the people are i've got to know in the last couple of years. a fantastic wake following a really lovely funeral for Paul. Thanks to the organisers for pulling off a memorable celebration of his life. At the moment it just seems like he hasn't turned up for a few forum events. I think I'll miss him an awful lot come the spring when he isn't around for rides. RIP fiddy.

i'm out if it was like it was this morning. lame as it sounds, i haven't been back to normal on my bike long enough to want to risk coming off it tomorrow and redamaging stuff that's only just stopped hurting. saying that, i do hope it isn't icy cos i'm really looking forward to this...!
sorry to hear about Tynan Scarlett, that must have been nasty. hope he's out of the worst now.

No because the colour scheme alerted me to it being fake because its green sunburst which is the colour scheme of a mid 80s Dawes Lightning.I thought I might stop someone on here buying a not 531 frame for to much money
it's not mid 80s judging by the decals. the dawes lightning was blue/light blue sunburst by '83, '84, the decals were the lower case ones and the Lightning wasn't 531 as far as i remember.. the decals on this look more like late 70s / early 80s.. not sure about the 531 bit. At any rate it seems someone's on their way to paying too much for a fairly run of the mill frame.

nice to know you got some use out of the frame Pistoffski...
for thirty quid with the new forks and extras as described this is a bargain beater frame and the paint should definitely be left in all its hotchpotch glory.. the thought of ditching the blues, purples and violets for a powdercoat just doesn't make sense - rock the look, it's an awesome one..

what's the "technical" bit about bmmf?
anyway, i think i should be back to some kind of capability by next week so as long as someone apart from bmmf is ridin fixed i'm in. it would be very nice to get in on this and continue upwards and onwards into the spring.
Sunday 31st January '10 - The "Off The Cuffley" or "North Road HTFU-Riders" Ride
26 mile loop from Cuffley. Profile: mixture of hilly and flat; also quite 'technical'.
Route is here.
Train Out - Kings Cross @ 8.55am, arriving Cuffley 9.26am
Train Back - Cuffley @ some time after 11am (trains are every half hour, at X.21 and X.51).
£4.00 for Groupsave4, £5.30 for Network Card or Groupsave3.

5.furious tiles - pjs
The route is a little shorter this time. Even if we're beleaguered by mechanicals (again), we shouldn't end up in the first wave of Sunday lunchtime twats; if it goes well (I will probably navigate 'on the hoof', but Garmin assistance is useful), we'll get round in an hour and a half or something.
There are some short sharp hills, but they're fine on medium gear fixed; and slightly twisty/bumpy descents.
North Londoners might consider riding out (if they're in the market for miles), and I expect the train stops at Finsbury Park.

The great French director Eric Rohmer died yesterday, aged 89. He's been one of my favourite filmmakers for a long time and if you haven't watched his films he's well worth getting into.
It's hard suggesting a good place to start with a director who made about 30 features over nearly 50 years but I got into his early 70s stuff first. I recommend Love In The Afternoon and Claire's Knee for starters and My Night and Maude's, Pauline at the Beach, The Aviator's Wife and a bunch of others if you like those.

Get some, you won't go back.
once you have started you will quickly find you become blind to the fugliness of the shoes, and embrace the fugly like an old friend.
I did go back. I got the extra power bit but they're simply not necessary to ride around town. like a lot of people i know on here i ride everywhere and I got bored of either carrying normal shoes everywhere to change into or being a cycling geek everywhere i was. i learned very quickly that there were no benefits weather-wise in their construction (the shoes and my feet still got soaked in rain) and i can only think of national health calliper shoes that look more unsexy than 95% of the cycling shoes on the market. the examples given above are typical.
in terms of power - i seem to have kept up with everyone on group rides since going back to clips and straps and i can still zoom around town if i want to. i'm not ruling out getting clipless again but i'd have to be doing 100 miles every weekend and be a proper roadie, which at the moment isn't where it is for me. none of my riding since i've been on here has needed them in my opinion.
to the OP i'd recommend you spend £35 on a new pair of vans rather than the £80 it'll cost you to go clipless. you'll feel the benefits of a new sole and you'll be good for 75 mile rides. Save your beat up old converse for rainy days.

26 degrees.. after the ten second walk from the changing rooms it's a grateful process getting in the water, then swimming through the steam made you feel like you were in an Antonioni film.. or it did me anyway... great stuff!
it was my first swim of the year, i've decided i need to swim well and i'm hoping it will be a year of improving technique and learning to swim properly, rather than just messing around for half an hour at a time. i'm hoping to go every day now, yesterday was great.
some more info for future users before we get bogged down in the whole tretubi / air stuff.. this is the breakdown of the tubing Columbus offered around the late 80s:
Max - Tube with oval profiles oriented according to the principal axes of the active and passive stresses. Intended exclusively for special competition machines
TSX - for high level professional use. Maximum rigidity and low weight. Reinforced with five continual spirals in addition to the traditional Columbus varied wall thickness
SLX - "Superbutted" (helical reinforced ends) for professional uses. Double Thickness butting.
SPX - "Superbutted" (helical reinforced ends) with increased thickness, for professional uses. Double thickness butting.
SL - High performance all-purpose road race set. Double thickness butting.
SP - for heavy use, large frame or rough road surfaces. Double thickness butting.
MS - "Multishape"; special "Gilco Design" set with different profiles: each tube is shaped to withstand specific stresses. Professional use. Double thickness butting.
Cromor - for enthusiasts requiring excellent performance at a moderate cost. Double thickness butting.
Aelle - For amateur touring uses. Lightweight thanks to the thin tubing and high yield point.
These were taken from a back page Columbus ad from a 1988 cycling mag, so the info is probably a translation from the standard Italian brochure.. I'm saying that cos of course they're not going to say that Aelle is lower end etc... there are a few more but they're off road and tandem tubings, "Tandem CM" for track use, "Tandem CR" for touring.
