I was having lunch at the girlfriends parents house today, and noticed that in their garage is her brothers old bicycle from his youth . . . its a mint condition Raleigh Volante from the late 80's early 90's, full 531 frame and forks, and a high end for the era shimano groupset, painted in a team banana esq colourway, but does not have the relevant graphics. It has older style horizontal dropouts
I cannot find any info on this model anywhere, and want to make him a fair offer for it as the frame is is in almost new condition, does anyone know more about it?

I tried to get hold of a set of the Bontrangers - they are used on the Trek Portland cyclocross bike, and some Garyfisher, and have quite tight clearences compared to the others which tend to be suspension adjusted.

They dont sell them seperateyl in the UK, but they do in the USA, however Trek dealers are banned from selling/shipping internationally to protect european dealers against the cheaper dealers and wont even take a non US registered card as payment, so icouldnt post them to a mate and get him to send them on. Having spent 6 months trying to get hold of a pair i am now resigned to getting some when i head out to Colorado in the New Year
Woundup make a very similar fork

aero on front, disc on back.
that is the way of things
I went through my aerospoke phase, and built what for me was my dream modern HHSB - did find it faster when you got up to speed, kind of felt like it was pulling you along
Reuseing the disc on the new Lo-Pro with a Zipp front
And RPM i know i never used the bike on the Velodrome (to my regret, and BDW will no doubt give it the thrashing it deserves), but i had to get a build like this out of my system
Pictured here when i first mocked it up:

You wont go wrong with the Atac Aliums, if you dont get on with them you wont get on with any clipless pedal, plus someone on here will snap them up. I think that the Specialized BG SPort is a great shoe that you can get hold of for about 45 quid, again which you caould easily sell on if you dont like. I got my Alliums for 20 quid new off ebay.

I hear you on the re-wording, it makes all the difference - the restriction of HGV's in central London at certain time makes sens too, but i feel it is the Retail industry that needs to be convinced on this more than anyone else - personally i have always thought that the west end should be pedestrianised with trams, and cycle lanes, and retail deliveries overnight - the pedastrianising of the area and the resulting up lift in footfall = more shoppers for retailers, would outwiegh the inconvenience of having to do deliveries at the dead of night
We need to find a souloution that is beneficial to us, but not outrageous to others

Ok i am going to be contreversial here and say that calling for a ban on HGV's of any sort is bull, and is probably going to result in any sort of campaign looking as though it is coming from pipe dreamers rather than realists. HGV's are the life blood of retail London.
Lorries dont kill people, badly trained driivers do, same as in a car, on a motorbike or on a bicycle, whats needed is better road education
As a former goods driver, i can tell you that any sort of spoke cadr saying Lorries Kill is going to do a lot more worse than good, it will antagonise the drivers more than anything else.
Half the problem with road safety campaigns is they always appear to come from the lunatic fringe of cyclists to the general public, and as such get dismissed as irelevant or to far fetched, and calling for a ban on HGV's is the same shit.
I still maintain that we should take steps to educate our community to better understand the risks of the road, rather than point the blame at others - too many cyclists put them selves in these positions without being aware of what kind of danger they are in - you should never ever move up the inside of a moving HGV or similar, you are playing with fire, getting that message across is a step in itself
We live in a city that is hopelessly outdated for all forms of transport, from pedestrians, to cyclists, to cars to HGV,s to public transport, everything is far from adequate, but this is because we live in a city that has grown and evolved over 2000 years, and was never designed to be traveled in as it is today.
All forms of transport need to work together, too often one policy is implemented to the benefit of one group of users that disadvantages another, for example the use of Motorbikes in Bus Lanes that has become a farce.
I think the spoke card idea is great, a great deal of good will exists on this forum to make things happen, and i feel like a dampner is being put on that now.
Bill, i know we have had words before, and i have the utmost respect for all you have done and your wealth of knowledge, and whilst i agree with the majority of what you have said, i have to disagree with your sentiments on the spoke card - as some of you know i build custom motorbikes in my spare time, and within that community we are very active at producing leaflets, flyers etc and distributing them round at events, meets, drinks etc - and guess what when you are talking to a fellow biker rather than a cop or public servant the message tends to get across, and is listened to and taken on board - the motorcycle community is very good at looking after itself, making sure that people who ride like twats know it, and helping those who need a hint or two.
I think a spreading of the word at ground level could do a world of good, and the spoke card initiative seems a great way of doing this.

Sometimes the simplest things get across the biggest messages - i also think that a lot of cyclists have very little idea about road safety, and are not aware of how other road users, such as HGV's use the road space (for example they don't realise that despite starting a turn miles out from the curb, how quickly the trailer of an HGV will be next to the curb, and on top of them)
Cyclists as a whole are the most undertrained road users, like i have said in other threads my Motorcycle training was the best thing i ever did for my cycling, because you are taught how to react to other road users, and how other road users occupy the space on the road and how that affects you. I dont know for fact, but i am sure that as part of their training HGV drivers are taught to look out for the cyclist coming up the inside, but as anyone who has driven an HGV will know, once a cyclist is in that position it is nigh on impossible to clock them - i used to drive a LWB transit for a living and it was hard enough in that. Of course that fact that they are probably taught to look out for us, means that an obvious failure to do so it rightfully prosecuted.
What i like about this campaign is it isnt some TFL advert thought up by some trendy media company, nor is it a preaching too from some lycra clads who the average cyclist cant relate to . . . instead this is a campaign that will be born out of a community of cyclists who probably represent the broad spectrum of Londons cyclist more than most, add to this that we all fly about on "cool hipster bikes" that are so a la mode right now, and tend to ride around in pretty casual gear, i think it is far more likely to sink in when someone says to us, hey whats that thing in your wheels about, and we talk to them on a level they understand. No one likes being lectured, but everyone like a discussion, as LFGSS shows!
To my mind if it save one life, its an excercise worth doing, especially given the amount of media whores on here who can spread the word of what we are doing.
The point is we should never put ourselves in a position where we can be blamed for the accident, we should all know how to ride the roads safely, and hopefully with the likes of BB heading the charge with the powers that be, it will only be a matter of time before HGV contractors, town planners, and the rest of the powers that be take notice of the need for some serious reform.

Love those videos - really get across the sketchiness of riding round town.
Why dont we have till Friday for everyone to work on Designs for cards, then have a vote over the weekend, and get things rolling next week?
