it is but it's really down to you on what's considered safe or not, choosing your own route is a good way to find out which's which direction you find more enjoyable/safer for you.
My commute to work was passed on to me by a colleague and I passed it on to another colleague and so on. If I had relied on the maps I would have not seen a cycle path on the common and other shortcuts in the one-way streets maze that is Pimlico.

Spotted 3 police and 4 PCOs at the end of Kennington Road to the A3 which is closed. Went to see them to check my way and they told me there were there for the roadworks and that nobody had been warned and that it was a big mess. I asked if they were resurfacing and adding the superhighways and the policeman said "oh yes. That's for you lot isn't it?" and one PCO added "it's alright for some".
Oh yeah i am sooo excited.

I think if this is happening on a daily basis, it becomes a priority.
Personally, I'd wait at the same distance from the kerb, but lean heavily to the left and put your foot up on the pavement or in the gutter (as long as you're able to restart without being very off-balance).
I have realised that it must be because I only unclip my right foot (I'm left footed). I am going to try to change the habit.

I still don't know what to do to avoid being undertaken by cyclists. This morning I waited at the red light to turn left I am at the front in the ASL. I kept looking back and raised my arm to indicate left a few times. 4 cyclists undertook me to go through the red. I was about 1 metre from the curb. I guess I will be ok but I am nervous that when the light changes I am going to collide with one of them.
Last night a cyclist undertook me at a red light (small ped crossing) and because she had no space to do so she had to put her left foot on the pavement to manoeuvre and brushed against me. The light changed at the same time, a car was behind me. I told her it was dangerous for me and her to do so but she had her music on so I don't think she heard me or even cared.
I guess there is not much I can do apart from chilling out.

Hey smart! I was stood alongside you at the lights, and was thinking of saying summat, but I thought I'd just sound daft.
Nice bike, tho.
(I was on my tourer. Don't tell anyone ;) )
I am well known to speak to other cyclists but it would make a change if I could participate in nice polite conversation :)

Thanks SkyBreaker and thanks for your pm. Yes I gave feedback and someone got back to me but never heard anything back. I should have been clearer on my expectations rather than "this is me, I've been riding in London for two years, had cycle training a while ago and want to check that I haven't developed bad habits, please sort it out". I didn't even know where I wanted to ride.
I have to say that I look much more behind than I used to do specially when I know that cars should allow more space and it definitely makes them slow down or give a wider berth. I also always look over my left hand shoulder when I am at the lights or when I think a "Mr or Mrs Fast" might try to undertake.
@Chocky, what a brilliant account!
I was discussing with a friend developing a class to help people travel in a more peaceful and relaxed way (car drivers, cyclists, tube users etc..). I need to sort myself out first though!
