Cool, just curious.. the HED conversion doesn't come with a lock ring.

Even on a 'conversion' kit it's still a 'suicide' fix. There's still no reverse threading for a track lockring to secure the adaptor to the hub and a BB lockring is utterly useless on a conversion kit. The only purpose of those kits is to space out the chainline to 42mm or thereabouts.

Wood mallets are heavy and the shafts break easily. I went through a dozen of them before going the ski pole route.
They were cheap broomstick handles though...

Aren't there some people who believe old chrome frames may be a bit brittle anyways? I remember seeing a snapped chrome frame on on Andy White's site and the frame was clean but nasty on the inside. I couldn't imagine a thin-wall tubed frame could stand up to the chemical process of old-school chroming (much harsher than newer methods both on frame and environment) and being shot blasted.

Do some research and maybe you can convince that woman of yours to keep it chrome. Just strip off the white paint, add Merckx decals and presto! Instant puppy savior!

there was a double freewheel bike with one reversed next to the normal freewheel and an idler that let the chain go round both, stop pedaling then pedal backwards to climb hills in an easier ratio.

I've seen a diagram of this setup and no matter how hard I studied it I still couldn't get my head around it! Supposedly it worked but the pedalling backwards bit was just too awkward, or something.

I think eggpie here on the forum has the book with the diagram...
