ahh thanks. i went east and sold a saddle for a couple of pints. (cheers ferris). will get to westies soon tho. right now i have some stinky stinky cheese and a tumbler of nice red. all is well.
despite! (yes there's more) leaving work and riding north over blackfriars going staight on in the bike lane only to have someone cut right across me at that junction where the cyclist was squished last week. managed to keep it to some frantic braking and exasperated gesticulating this time.
that's three too many dear deaths for one day (in all the exitement i didn't mention the cabbie doing the classic kerb-to-u-turn-without-looking-or-signalling that nearly took me out only a few minutes after the first incident).
we all have bad days i suppose. i'm just glad to be home and safe right now.
and looking forward to getting back out there with my om-face on tomorrow.

bout 7.5 miles each way for me. kilburn/cricklewood to southwark. figured it out on map my run. useful site for working out distances.
do that in the week and usually 25+ miles a day at weekends. going backwards and forwards to the studio in limehouse via islington and stokie where most of my friends are.
it's just a nice distance for me actually. long enough to work up a sweat but still reasonably quick and fun with a good range of routes to choose from.

Dooks and the art of Zen
i know i know. i usually try and keep zen (or at least keep a lid on it). at worst as on monday i might indulge in a little light-hearted hand signalling, window tapping and eye-pointing as in "hello! what ARE you doing you numpty!" sort of thing. but for some reason the intent behind this morning's little stand off just flicked a switch to a hitherto unexplored part of my neanderthal brain. like i said, i'm really not proud of it and would like to think that i'll bear it in mind for next time. i'm cool now tho thanks.
as for overtaking trucks. i know, i know. but in my defence:
he was in the left lane indicating left and braking to turn off. i checked the traffic behind me (plenty of room) and pulled into the right hand lane. the truck then turned the opposite way to the one he was signalling and started to encroach on the other lane and come to a stop. i was watching him the entire time and keeping out of his way. when he totally blocked the entire road, i stopped safely behind him in the right hand lane. THEN mister cuntypants in his white van came hammering behind me and started with the beepbeep. hardly darting up the inside of lorry turning left is it?
thanks for all the concerned and calming words tho. you are collectively wonderful and wise. i will be very "om" on the way home tonight.

i'm not proud of this at all but i lost it in a seriously mentalist way this way this morning. i've only just stopped shaking in fact.
coming down edgeware road following a truck in the left hand lane. he indicates left to turn off and i check behind me and go to overtake him on the right. still indicating left the truck starts to drift out to the right, and i am forced to go with him, he keeps going and going and going till he's forced me into the right lane and to emergency stop. he's now blocking both lanes. a car coming up in the right hand lane starts beeping and gesticulating at me (not the truck) so i give him a slightly less than cheerfull "fuck off mate" before waiting for the truck to move and carrying on.
As i'm coming up to the next set of lights the guy pulls up along side me then tries to intimidate me/force me to the kerb by coming waaaay to close, swerving at me and leaning right across to stare me out.
i. fucking. lost it.
i think it was just that it was entirely intentional that caused me to snap. i don't really think he was trying to kill me but the fact that he was deliberately threatening to run me over with a car just caused me to totally flip. i pulled across the road on front of him and started SCREAMING at him, spitting and shaking, i got of my bike and leant right over his bonnet, screaming at him to stay the fuck away from me etc etc. if i'd had a d-clock to hand instead of a chain round my waist i have no doubt i've put it though his windscreen. absolutely no doubt. i thought about attacking him with my bike... but thought better of it. got back on and rode away. he left me alone after that but the adrenaline was flowing so hard that i was shaking like a leaf the rest of the way in. took m ethe best part of two hours to calm down enough to write this.

my knuckles are still a bit sore from yesterday morning when I was forced to hammer them hard on the driver's side window of a blinker wearing "destroyer of worlds" merc who'd just nearly killed me by edging me all the way into the kerb on an otherwise empty reget street. nearly went over his boot lid trying to brake and swerve from out of his way. gave him a good "OOOOIIIII!WHATHEFUCKAREYOUDOING!? (bang bang bang on window) CNUT!" before riding off with the middle finger rampant for his benefit. poor bastard nearly jumped out of skin when i hammered on the window and sort of did a momentary leap to get out/give chase/call the police before (hopefully) realising what he'd done and sitting back down.

going to have to resurrect this thread to confess to shameful drunken stack into a bus stop full of people on saturday night.
went out riding in the day and then met the girlfriend at a pub in islington for a friend's afternoon birthday drinks. from there to old street for more drinks and some grub. then to a shitty club in hoxton square for a colleague's birthday. the night was pretty horrible and i spent a lot of time shuttling to and from the bar to kill time until the place closed at 1 by which time there had been (among many other things) tequila.
miss dooks blagged a lift home and i decided to ride knowing full well i shouldn't. it took me quite a long time to change back into my cycling shoes and roll up my jeans without falling over. i then rolled off through the back streets of hoxton. i went up city road and was careful not to jump the lights all the time thinking "easy now easy now - you're way too drunk to be doing this. just take it easy". i was just starting to relax a bit when i made it across the crossroads and had to pull out to overtake a stopped bus. i looked over my right shoulder to check the way was clear and just totally lost my balance. i wobbled massivley and when i looked back to the front i was no longer riding parallel to the kerb but was heading straight towards it, totally out of control. i remember the queue of people scattering out of the way as i crashed drunkenly into the kerb. i must have somehow managed to unclip and vault the bars. i remember careening across the pavement and crashing into the bus shelter as my bike clattered on to the pavement behind me. i sat down hard amongst a crowd of startled people. all i could do was sit there and laugh with my head in my hands.
i eventaully managed to regain enough composure to remount and continue the rest of the way home. very. slowly.
shame
EDIT: just had a bit of a flashback. despite the best good intentions to take it easy in the immediate aftermath of the above, i've just remembered that what i *actually *did was practice bunny hops pretty much the entire way home.

Dude, Hello. Greg from ex- Havana Guns here... we played at Metro a year ago together. I know Ollie, but we've not officially met.
how odd. we were just talking about your band the other day. you have a new name and songs i hear? I'm sure we must have exchanged pleasantries at some point. I'm pretty sure I even played bass for you guys in a soundcheck once? let us know when you're gigging again.

recovering guitar geek here. i used to be a right gear nerd and have tonnes of stuff including spare stage guitars for different tunings and spare amps, mandolins and a handful of acoustics but have just massively cut down on my collection. i seem to care way less than i used about what gets used for what now to the extent where i'm regularly DI-ing guitars for recording demos and just picking up what's about for recording. I'm sure that'll change if and when i start playing live regularly again. Maybe not.
sorry nahuavkine but i really don't like PRS's! as a rule i'm all about the fender + fender combo. there are always exceptions of course but generally i prefer a 25" scale length, single coils and few effects into a cooking valve amp.
following the great gear cull i'm now now down to:
2000 Fender M Tele (MIA w/glendale bridge and brass saddles)
Late 70s Sigma DR28 acoustic
Early 90s Fender Strat (MIM)
Late 60s Framus solidbody (in red sparkle!)
60s Reissue P-Bass1974 Fender (SF) Pro Reverb.
1968 Fender (SF) Champ
Peavey Classic 30
Ampeg B200 Bass amp
Sessionette 100 Bass ampi generally don't use much in the way of effects. Reverb and Tremolo from the amp if available but i do use a bit of the following:
Ibanez TS9 or Digitech Badmonkey overdrives.
Marshall Bluesbreaker II (used as straight signal booster)
T-Rex Tremster Tremolo
Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb
Danelectro Danecho and PB&J for slapback, echo and delay.Errr and that's about it actually. Got a a pod for playing with on demos.
Other than that lot I tinker about on Uke and Mandolin and Melodica at home.

i just finished painting mahhh bike last week. did 5 or 6 coats of white on it and three coats of clear. i used plasticote paint which and clearcoat. pretty happy with the finish although it isn't as tough as i'd have liked (chipped it already pumping up a tyre while the bike was leaning against a railing).

stripping, prepping, spraying and clearcoating took about just over a week all told. including two/three days drying time before assembling. the slightly dimpled effect you can see in the close up pics evened out a lot as it dried. i think those pics were pre-clear-coat too.
