Interesting. Thanks for feeding back on here. Which group are you?
I'm Lewisham and you probably know me better as Jane!
It was interesting. No one thought the hair and makeup thing was an issue, to be honest. But that could be because it's not a particular priority for the kind of folks who go to cycling meetings. Except, I have discussed this issue with lots of women in different settings, and it has never been mentioned. Like I said before, there were different barriers for different groups of women, but every female non cyclist I've ever spoken to has mentioned fear of traffic as one of the barriers. I have "bike buddied" quite a few women on their first rides to work. Quite a few of them carried on and became confident cyclists. But a few of them gave up despite the support. Every one of those women said the traffic still scared them too much. I have always tried to help people find routes that avoid busy roads and junctions but if you live south of the river and work north of it, that's not really possible. So, I'm guessing, safe, proper cycle paths would have kept those women riding. -

We discussed this issue at my local LCC group meeting (mixed sex, third of it female) last night, as we had received an email about the LCC board considering this. The consensus was, that while there might be different barriers to cycling for different groups of women (we are not just a great lump of girlz for goodness sake who all think, look and behave in the same way, you know, there are old women, younger women, women from all kinds of different ethnic and cultural groups, single women, others with tons of family responsibilities etc etc etc) the one thing that would get the largest numbers of women from all different groups on a bike would be safer roads, with less motor traffic moving around at slower speeds. The majority at our meeting thought that the LCC's Go Dutch campaign was the kind of approach that would be the most successful. Build the safe and pleasant cycleways and they will come, women, children, babies on the backs of bikes, as well as a few more men!

I have just sent off an application to be a Breeze ride leader. So a little disappointed to read of MotherGirl's experience. If they accept me, I'll still do it. However, I already have a full time job in a profession where I am constantly having to set, maintain, achieve and improve targets. So I won't be too happy if that same ethos is applied to something I'm doing as a volunteer in the little free time I have.
These were my thoughts on Cycletta http://lewishamcyclists.co.uk/cycletta-is-coming/

Vaidas is just a quick ride up the Rye and follow route 22 (or is it 21) over the railway line to Honor Oak. So no, not Peckham but near enough and good enough to be useful. and anything in East Dulwich is just not in the same class as what we have in Honor Oak or Peckham, so not worth mentioning.
Bellenden Rd has only become what it is as it's near enough to E. Dulwich for all those who can't afford E.Dulwich to live there instead and just pretend. (But, I'm just an inverted snob, so don't mind me) -

Thanks- I did try one of these (my uncle's bike shed was a cornucopia of bike parts)- they do fit better but I would still have to chamge the brakes. The brake pads won't quite align with the braking surface and just scrape the tyre a tad. The brakes are the originals- Weinmann centerpulls and while a modern replacement would be more efficient, they are one of the few original parts left on the frame. I can ride it with 700's so will probably just carry on- it's fine for short rides around town, just won't ever be a bike I use for long rides ever again.

My first proper bike (one which was mine and mine alone) was a (secondhand) Holdsworth Equipe= 19 1/2 " frame with 26 x 1 1/4 wheels. I still have this frame over ** years later- built up as a singlespeed. However, it's really difficult to get wheels of that size and I haven't found any alloy rims at all anywhere. I run 700C's on it now, but they are a touch too big- would 650's be as near as possible to the original wheel size?

I did say I was keeping the tyres and tubes although they they are in the photo. They are worth more than I'm asking for the wheels!
Just to let everyone know- I have 6 dibs for the wheels now- you can PM me if you want for them but I'm guessing that at that this price, it's unlikely all those deals will fall through. -
I'll offer £20 on the Soma saddle.? I can get a brand new one for £34.
Well- buy that one then. Mine is still 4 quid cheaper and is as good as new. I'm selling the wheels really cheap as I got them for free, but I paid over 40 quid for the saddle for my daughter's bike - she used it on one short ride then bunged her old B17 back on because the Soma has no saddle bag clips. It is as good as new, not a mark on it. Take a look.

-
I'm not really interested in splitting the wheels if i can shift in one go- for goodness sake 30 quid is dirt cheap! You could probably buy both and sell the rear on and make a profit! I share my home with people who have got a bit fed up with the amount of bike junk I have lying around so just need to get rid of it as quickly as poss to keep things sweet.

Pair of Blank blue brake levers 4 quid
I have a white Charge Spoon saddle and a gold glitter Soma saddle like the one in the picture here. 30 quid for the Soma (hardly used) and 15 for the Charge.
WHEELS SOLDI would rather have this stuff picked up, but can arrange to meet in Central or South East London somewhere with the levers and saddles.

It looks like its a 52cm - 20 or maybe 21 inch in old money? I'm 5'2" and my old bike is a Holdsworth equipe 19 1/2 " boys racing frame which is the right frame size for me in old style frame sizing- the Dawes looks like a straight top tube so a 52cm in that style is smallish but not that small- it would be a touch too big for me (although I have ridden bikes that size) my daughter is 5'5" and I have just built up an old Raleigh frame of that size for her- it fits her fine.
The Dawes looks like a great little bike though. It was one of the bikes I considered when i finally had enough money to buy a brand new bike- in the end I saved up for a bit longer and got a Roberts Roughstuff built for me- gorgeous bike and tough as anything- ridden thousands of miles on it loaded with full camping kit over roads and roughstuff- if you can afford it, Chas Roberts will build you a great bike. -
I have been a member of LCC for years. In the beginning, I think, what Blue Quinn wrote, was true. We did push that approach. I think there was a view that if you get enough people out there on bikes, road conditions would change around that. The critical mass idea. Well, lots more cyclists have appeared on the roads compared with the 80's. But change has been slow. And with Boris' tenure at TfL, seems to have stalled completely and possibly even reversed in favour of motor traffic again. To be fair to LCC, I think they have taken this on board and changed their approach, not without some internal opposition. That's what their new Go Dutch policy is all about.
