Thanks very much for all the replies everyone. I've always wanted a Capri! And the Corrado is sweet but no way I could afford the insurance on that car.
The Octavia estate or the Focus Zetec sound like good shouts. Or the 207. Are Peugeots reliable?
The early suggestion of the turbo diesel Astra sounds sensible too but I just don't want a Vauhall!
Tried to convince my girlfriend the camper (mystery machine) was a good idea but she's not having it.

Reliability would be the first concern, then performance, bearing in mind that it can't be too beefy as it will kill me on the insurance. Would also want it to be economical but I guess it would have to be a compromise between these things? Not being a driver just yet I really don't have much of a clue about these things, although I guess any move from our 1.1 litre Micra is going to see an improvement performance wise I would have thought?! Enough grunt to overtake lorries on motorways in less than a minute would be a big step forward.

This would seem an odd thread to post in this forum but I thought you sage lot might have been in my situation in the past and be able to offer some helpful advice.
My girlfriend and I are in the market for a car. She is a photographer and needs something reliable and presentable for work. We've had a Micra that was gifted by a Gran a couple of years ago but this had died so we need a replacement.
I'm doing driving lessons so I'll be able to drive on holidays, and also so I can load my bikes on the car and go mountain biking or out to the country for a spin at the weekend.
We want to spend about £2k for something reliable that won't be too ridiculous for me to insure once I pass my test, and that's not so small that putting racks with bikes on it makes it topple over.
Can anyone help with recommendations?
Thanks.
Jim.

Ah old HK! I grew up there 87 to 95. My Mum's still there and I'm going back to keep my ID active in February. I live up on Braemar Hill in North Point so never even considered cycling when I was living there as a nipper as the hills are killer, but would love to go for a burn through Wan Chai and Central now, although I'm sure it would be helluva scary and give me a new appreciation of how London drivers are aware of cyclists. Last time I was in Hk about 3 years back I was on the lookout for cyclists and spotted a couple down on the flat spots by the harbour but the riding looked pretty sketchy as motorists on thoroughfares just aren't in the habit of looking out for people on bikes on the roads. As a poster above has said, I kind of always thought that HKFG must be pretty posey as Hk really isn't built for fixed. And all the bikes that I see out of HK seem to have a lot of money spent on them and they're always on balconies and not being ridden! Having said that I'd love to go for a ride when I get back.

Finished my stealth bike. Mysterious frame from ebay. Seller said it might be a Graham Weigh although they can't confirm that. I've not been able to find any others like it. Seat tube cut out and with compact geo. Super light and with very smooth welds. Goes like stink! Wallis is a youth racing team from up north. If anyone could shed any more light on the frame that would be great. Jim.
Edit: Phone pics look awful! I'll get some better ones up when I get my hands on a better camera.

I bought a pair of Nike Rongbuk ACG shoes a couple of weeks back.
Perhaps not the most sartorial sneaker but for a Gore Tex shoe a bit of a bargain. I've been in two downpours since I got them and am very pleased with my purchase. They're light, very breathable, totally waterproof and well made. I would imagine they're tricky to get in and out of clips and straps though as they have a very jagged tread pattern on the sole. Since I plan on riding my tourer with flats for most of the winter months this isn't a problem for me.

Cool Poodles.
No word from DouglasAdams so the pedals are available.
I'm open to offers on the rest of the stuff. Except the straps. They're worth £15!
I can also deliver in the evening anywhere in zones 1&2 but only at about 9pm.
Need to be rid of this stuff to build new bike for girlfriend.
Thanks.

It got the forum's favourite lock, the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit locking both frame and wheel to the stand not leaving enough leverage rooms.
The rear wheel is securely locked with a pitlock-style nuts, and the saddle have a chain looped round it to the frame;
[/QUOTE]Isn't having an undesirable saddle enough to put off the crooks? Who would steal that?! Having it manacled to the frame is only going to encourage thievery as no one would nick that unless the chain was there in the first place to tell them it was worth nicking! Haha.
edit: very thorough though - nothing wrong with that.

New singlespeed for my girlfriend.
