i think the only measurement yo can really trust is spaghetti hoops' teeth...
but if his teeth aren't within easy reaching distance, you can always take your stem down to a bike shop and ask.
also, look at the closely bars, sometimes they have the size stamped into them (although a lot of the time this is hidden by the stem or grips).

ok, so it sounds like you've stripped the thread for the sprocket, and now the only thing holding it on is the lockring. when you backpedal, the lockring tightens and the friction between the sprocket and lockring is the only thing holding it on.
i'd follow prav's advice and just give up on that side...

good to hear there aren't any serious injuries.
that police response is an absolute joke considering the new bike safety 'campaign' that boris has just launched.
like fudge says, make a complaint. we really need people to start taking things like this seriously. if even the authorities don't care about the safety of cyclists on the road, i dread to think what kind of message that sends out drivers.
