Just got back from my first real long roadtrip in the Bimmer, bit worried about the steering. At low speeds it's fine, but anything above 60mph it feels a bit vague and it's really sending some nasty shakes through the steering wheel when hitting bumps or potholes. Think the bushings need looking at, hopefully it's nothing too expensive. The garage I bought it off gave me a 3 month warranty from these guys http://www.warrantyfirst.co.uk/dynamic.php so hopefully it's all covered.

New wheel security system from Kryptonite - bike has to be flipped upside down to release the wheelnuts, which makes it hard/impossible to do if locked to a post, great simple idea: http://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/new-bike-gear-previews/new-bike-locks-kryptonite

I've ended up putting down a deposit on a tricked out, low mileage, 10 year old bmw 318ti compact, felt really solid and comes with a full service, valet and 3 month warranty for a tad under £2k. Not as fast or as flashy as a GTI - but I do love rwd cars, not that I'm going to be doing much drifting ;).

I almost took the plunge on a '99 Golf GTI 1.8 turbo today, looked good initially on paper, 2 previous owners, 75,000 on the clock. Plenty of paperwork, though it had missed a scheduled cambelt change at 50,000 miles and the guy was selling it for his mate, who I didn't exactly warm too. Alarm bells started ringing and I reluctantly walked away. Glad I brought my Dad along with me as I probably would have bought it.
I've now got a 1500 quid burning a hole in my pocket and need to buy a car for commuting to and from work with the occasional trip over to Wales to see the folks, unfortunately I'm also a bit of a car snob/semi-reformed petrol-head, so I also do want something a little interesting to hoon around in, preferably German or Swedish. Gonna try and view a similar GTI over the weekend and perhaps a 3 series compact. Anyone seen anything else in London that may fit the bill - up to around £2k?

I'm out in Val Claret at the moment, first time skiing - but been getting used to it quite fast, four days in an I can get down blues no problem, parallel turns are OK and getting better. The instructor chucked some of us down a little slalom course earlier, which was actually quite fun. Highlights so far include the Génépy on the run down from Grand Motte and the blues from the top of Grand Huit (Perce-neige and combe). Wondering if I'm ready for a red yet, but may leave that till next time, no point pushing myself too far this time!
