VanUden rather relied in his trolling on people who know him understanding his sense of humour. While the forum has changed, and he shouldn't have been quite so oblique, you can consider his offer of a pint as genuine, as he is a good egg.
Thanks Oliver, I guess the forum has changed more than I realise. Both you and MarkyBoy are officially owed pints but I only make it out around Camberwell or Brixton these days - not Finchley ;)
Let me know when :)

My PM just now to uber_doofer:
Hey fella, you've done nothing but bitch at me over the Thatcher thread and I've not bitten back (I think!). However, if you go to forum drinks at all let me know which, I'd be happy to meet you for a friendly pint. Typed words can often be misconstrued. Ta ah.
And her reply:
You're a fucking mental.
You've purposely gone out to troll-and admitted as much-and come across as a sanctimonius, condescending cunt. Me bitch at you? Take a look at your own posts. And why the fuck are you now trying to play the decent, moderate guy and dangling some kind of virtual olive branch as if that (again) gives you claim to some kind of moral superiority? I can happily accommodate alternative viewpoints, I can't accommodate people thinking they get to purse their lips and play the grandee for the sake of hearing their own voice-it's just morbid narcissism and all you are trying to do is get attention.
This is me saying no, I have no interest in meeting you for a friendly pint but I'm sure your phone is ringing off the hook so this won't trouble you.
Charming - what I was trying to do was heal a rift with someone who had clearly taken massive exception to my stance that Thatcher while now dead probably shouldn't have her grave danced on. However, uber_doofer if ever you feel like coming out from behind your keyboard there's a pint with your name on it. Can't say fairer than that.

no she would have paid people from poor working class backgrounds a pitance to do her dirty work for her with no comeback and no sympathy if they got too ill or old to work before throwing them on the scrapheap.
A true humanitarian who had numerous dictators and despots on her christmas card list and counted as personal friends. But those fucking people on the internet, eh? What cunts.
Are your roots working class? Did you go to a dodgy comprehensive?

Have a look at the Canada Sands as an example- historically the cost of extracting the oil was far to high to make it viable, new extraction techniques and rising global prices are changing that however.
Coal mining is a very human intensive process (if you don't just dig a massive, fuck off hole and damn the countryside) so it's expensive, relative to drilling a big hole and then allowing oil to rush out.
However, that is not to say that British coal would not, at some point be economical.
But - the environmental movement would make the political cost very high indeed, obviously burning coal generates carbon dioxide, which we have promised to try to cut down.
OK, thanks for the info, so it looks like it's probably not really viable commercially or environmentally to mine coal here in the UK?
No doubt it sounds like I'm being flippant here but I'm not, I'm trying to better understand something that happened when I was a kid in terms of the closures.
It would be great if it became simpler to extract coal (less dangerous and labour intensive) and if it became more valuable / useful as something other than fuel because it'll screw things up when burnt. Maybe something else in time, like tech components, who knows?
-
Picked up a 1969 Seiko 6005 Diver, even a July model (lunar landings) also NOS hands and NOS bezel - this is my new and final project. I've devoted far too much time to watches over the past 3 years. Lovely as they are they are just trinkets - albeit beautiful ones that make me tremble like a giddy fawn.

If there's masses of coal and it's really valuable then surely with the tech we have today it would be far simpler and financially viable from a business perspective to extract it? If it's not really that valuable as a fuel due to current market demands for energy and the cost of extracting / processing it then sadly it was harsh but the right thing.
Why would a 'truly' valuable mineral be ignored and wasted?
-
OK, somebody correct me here - please. I'm punting a guess that if the UK was mineral rich and there was masses of coal here and coal was a really valuable mineral then it would still be being extracted?
If it's not valuable is this simply because of the way in which power is now provided?
If it is valuable and we have loads of it why aren't the mines still open?
Please explain.

I did, I was there.
Never forgive, never forget.
Death of old age was too good for her.
She should have died, cold, lonely, hungry, frightened and in pain.
The current incarnation are just as bad.
Remember to vote, come the election.
If it's any consolation for you she was possibly lonely, hungry, I doubt she was cold as you'd at least expect the heating to be on at The Ritz, when she realised she was having a stroke she was very probably frightened and no doubt in pain.
When it's your time (hopefully not for a long time) I hope you pass in your sleep, painlessly, and gently. Peace.

How typical. 40yr old+ man tells old "cool stories" and makes sweeping assumptions about the youth.
you been to Greece lately?
My generation rules the streets whilst trying to correct YOUR generation's fuck ups.
Soon it will be our turn in the board rooms and the parliament.
Good stuff, go for it and enjoy, you'll learn loads more first hand. Best of luck. Not meant patronisingly but I know that's how it will be taken.
If you could see me face-to-face over a pint you'd see me smiling.
Bear in mind my kids will try to correct your generation's fuck ups ;) and so it goes around and around and around...

F*ck the pseudo-socialists that can afford to shed a tear over pan-seared salmon on a bed of rocket. I will be raising a glass of Drambuie to Thatcher tonight, I may even follow it up with a sweet British sherry, while gloating over my free toy motorcycle from the Poll Tax Riots. Most of you kids would have filled you nappies when faced with 40 coppers in full riot gear.
I digress but one funny incident I do remember was a bunch of Chelsea supporters turning up out of nowhere and facing off the coppers. The fans all linked arms to form a human wall and stood their ground while the coppers advanced. Bear in mind when I joined the march with a few other mates heading into Trafalgar Sq. it was all really peaceful, families, kids, just a quiet march. When we stopped at Trafalgar Sq. and the police started to wade in it all kicked off, it really was a free-for-all.

To those about to post that they participated at the Poll Tax riots, or at a Miner's demo/riot, or even at the Timex strike/riot in Dundee... you should remember that this is a public internet site and that the internet never forgets.
Some things, are just best said where it's not going to be permanently archived and associated to you.
David, with respect, If I get done 20+ years later for being a stupid student crim at the Poll Tax Riots I'll pay double and give half to you and the forum for server fees.

Hitler was in power in the 1930/40s. I'm assuming you were there then, so using your own logic you can't comment.
Now that's sorted let's move on shall we?
I was talking about Turkish immigrants and racism, you've taken my comment out of context because you were grasping at straws. Now let's move on.

Comparing someone who died 60 years ago along with popular support for their destructive policies to someone who died today but whose destructive policies live on is rather stupid?
Would you hate Hitler if the Nazi party were in power in britain today and still operating the death camps?
What on earth makes you think that Hitler hasn't influenced current policies in Germany today? Just look at the way Turkish immigrants have been treated for generations in Germany.
I wouldn't hate him, I'd try to avoid getting caught but then this isn't what's happening and Thatcher didn't gas millions. Silly boy.
-
OK let's start a list, who was actually at the Poll Tax Riots? I've still got a couple of mementos, even managed to loot some earrings for my then girlfriend. Good memories, happy days.
This active at the Poll Tax Riots:
VanUden
mikecGood man! What did you get? I got some earrings for my gf, a necklace for my sister and a toy motorbike for myself (yes I know but it was all I could grab through the window) which I still have to this day.

Way to troll VanUden!
You're asking everyone on the thread to justify their posts about Thatcher based on whether they were alive at the time? So any Beatles fans who weren't alive when The Beatles were are just saying they like the music to be cool, right? They can't possibly understand any of the legacy?
Millions of people fucking hated Thatcher and the next days will see plenty people express it.
OK! Because you gave a vaguely sensible reply you get a vaguely sensible answer. Thatcher's legacy is nothing like people moan and bitch about. Yes she was a cow. No she didn't destroy the world. She was a power-crazed mad old bint but she doesn't deserve this level of poison - especially (and this is who my trolling was aimed at) those kids who have heard about or read about her and grasped that it's cool to hate her because it's too fucking easy for them to jump on this bandwagon. It's sheep mentality at its worst.
I'm Jewish and I don't hate Hitler. Why? Because it would be a complete and utter fucking waste of energy.

If you care to look you'll find loads of forum threads started by me, for example the thread on Boxing that remerges every couple of months or the thread on Gazelle bicycles (having Dutch roots myself) that is alive and well. Since I joined the forum back in 2007 I've contributed a lot and met and made some great friends but thanks for your input.
Your personal attack won't bother me, you're better off wasting your breath elsewhere, if you were game enough to meet up at one of the forum drinks venues for a pint I'd gladly buy you one. But I doubt you have the balls - this is not a threat, please don't take it as one as you have previously insinuated, this is simply an offer of friendship as two reasonable people away from the internetz being real :)
