Sano I don't get it. What's wrong with saying hi and introducing yourself?
If it's fine for anyone to sell on here, then the doors should be open for classifieds from whoever: Evans, Decathlon, even (gasp) Nike... Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see that, but this is meant to be a community. What's wrong with entering into the community spirit?
I trust the (very well exercised!) filter of the members here to run a large retailer out of town pretty sharpish, if Nike were to sneak in promotion, the members here would be on it like Hippy on a pie.
Don't conflate Mr Ten Pedals with Nike PLC.
What's wrong with entering into the community spirit ? - nothing if you are not ostracized for not wanting or able to join in, people have been fairly specific in what joining in means - repeatedly and thematically 'go on a ride' - so Mr I live in sheffield with two baby daughters and a night time job why don't you fuck off with your bike parts, you have not been on a ride with us, we will by our parts from Evans thank you very much (how dare he try and sell me cheap tyres without first becoming social engaged with me).

|³|MA3K I don't think a forum is an appropriate venue for unsolicited sales, of course there is a classified section but I think if you are going to try turn a profit of this forum you should at least contribute a bit.
Agree or no, my opinion isn't that hard to understand.
I understand your opinion.
I suppose we are all different in our outlook, my own view - which I have bored everyone with more than enough - is that I am drawn more towards a street market environment where people with small scale operations (everything from the guy with 3 sets of cranks to someone who has got his friend to bring over 10 sets of wheels) can freely offer them on forums/backs of pubs/news-agent's windows/car boots - without having to first past any test (social or otherwise) or in any way prove themselves to the people they have offered the parts too.
We don't agree, that's clear, but that's cool, we are all different, no hard feelings. :)

I think this forum is a nice place and through it I have met some interesting people and gone on some cool rides, I would have never done the Dunwich for example.
I have learned some things about bikes and stuff I never knew before. If I like it and feel it is a good environment then why wouldn't I want other people to join in?
I think I understand what you are saying, how does this relate to how you deal with someone who simply wants to get rid of 4 sets of dura ace brakes they got in a warehouse sale ?
I am guessing what you are saying is that you are more comfortable buying parts off people you know and find interesting ?
-
|³|MA3K Uh, them to join in the forum?
Why would you want them to join forum ?
(by the way I am not trying to be confrontational on this subject regardless of how I sound, I am genuinely interested in your answer and not looking to prove anyone wrong or right, I find things like people's morality very interesting)
-
vegansdontneedgears but this guy did go on rides and such no?
Why do you need him to go on rides ?
Have you ever bought anything from Evans, Chainreaction or Wiggle, or indeed from any established retail outlet ?
Did you question whether they had joined you on ride or met you for a drink before you gave your money over to the shareholders of the parent company ?
Then why should the bloke - who picks up 30 pairs of grips and 6 track frames and thought it would be cool to offer them direct to the people who are interested - be held up to this arbitrary moral code ?
-
|³|MA3K I don't agree, people who turn up out of essentially nowhere aren't selling us this stuff to do us a favor.
I agree with you 100%.
They are not doing us a favour, that is not my point, they are trying to offload some spare pedals or a set of wheels they have come by.
I think we can all agree on the motive.
|³|MA3K
They are selling stuff they have bought in order to make a profit.Yes !
And I would rather buy some cranks from some bloke who has 6 sets he got cheap in Japan/US rather than funnel my money into a large company like Evans or Wiggle.
|³|MA3K
If they haven't joined in the forum by posting/going on rides or other social events then what the difference between them and some DVD-seller?Nothing, what difference would you like ?

pj oh dear.
i didn't tell anyone to fuck off.
i am glad people sell their shizzle on here.
PJ, I am not aiming my comments at anyone in particular, certainly not you , so nothing personal/no offense intended ! :)
It is just a pervading attitude, apparent by the fact that is is recognized enough to be a source of humour, if you know what I mean. It is only a joke now that we tell anyone new selling some stuff to fuck off because that is what commonly happens.
Again, nothing about anyone in particular, indeed it is not even just this forum, just a general attitude that stifles small market mentality and plays into the hands of establish retail.
Jesus fucking Christ I am turing in to a Marxist.

[gets soap box out]
I've said it before and I'll say it again, If we insist that people have to 'join the club' before telling us about the box of grips or 1/8" chains they have for sale they will likely just piss off and sell it elsewhere like ebay or gumtree where they are not called a cunt for offering some spare parts to us first.
So we tell private sellers to fuck off and are rewarded by an increased reliance on larger retailers like Evans and Chainreaction for parts. I suppose there is nothing wrong with that, but I am more attracted to the smaller scale (and often cheaper) trading that goes on in forums like this.
I have (more than once) bought stuff off people who have posted here, people who have been told by more than one person to 'fuck off' they tend to be people operating out of their bedroom/front room holding little more than a few items at a time.
This really is the sort of arbitrary and baseless morality that large retail chains and brands tap into.
If we were to tell this guy to go fuck himself (like many similar posts are treated) the result simply means someone will have to buy their pedals from a larger retailer for more money.
[/slips off soap box and rips trousers - melts into crowd]

edmundane hmm after dissing surly for a bit on the other thread... i'm considering the possibility of getting one.
i have a rolf vector wheel where the ratchet in the cassette body is buggered. good idea to get a fixxer to fix it up?
and also anyone know where is the cheapest place to get one? wiggle is selling it for 60GN... and SJS 70GN... not exactly cheap :P
Remove the cassette.
Open up the hub shell and fill it with an steel epoxy or similar.
Reassemble, let the epoxy cure.

. . . teach them well and let them stultify small scale traders unless they adhere to my own social and moral norms - Show them all the beauty Evans possesses inside.
