I copied a route of the internet onto my GPS for a group ride up there, didn't bother looking at the profile and it turned out to be a total killer of a ride. Defintaly the hardest 60mile cycle I've ever done. Started with Kirkstone pass then did Hardknott pass in the photo and another equally tough one. I was releaved from navigational duties after that one!

I always use Campag on my road bikes, I just prefer it to shimano, I prefer the looks and the function of the levers and it always works flawlessly for me. Not tried SRAM yet but since all my wheels are Campag compatible now it would be annoying to change.
I'm sure Shimano have had some terrible/flawed products but the thing with Campag is these seem to be the ones that become most collectible or desirable so we keep getting reminded about them. Sherriff Star Pista hubs = explode when used on the road, Fluted pista cranks = crack and snap, delta brakes = hard/impossible to set up to work properly yet these all sell for big bucks on e bay.

As an Engineer I wouldn't risk it, doesn't look like theres much over lap and I've always been paranoid after using a badly made stem that caused my bars to snap because of the pressure points. These bars wouldn't snap but I'd still be worried about them moving slightly and then coming free.
On my road bike I use a Ritchey stem that has quite a small clamp that would probably hold it well.

beautiful route. and to reassure your dad, it's rolling mostly (+lots of big groups so fast average speeds)
the main climb up shiehallion (sorry can't be bothered to check spelling) is not as bad as I thought it would be, and there are just a couple of short sharp spikes (not talking about the tacks). from what I remember.
I did it this year and was surprised how un hilly it was and Shaiehallions quite easy as it levels of at loads of points. My Dad will be fine, he will probably end up nailing it! Me and my brother are doing it as his domestiques so we'll be there to help him and set him up for the sprint finish!

It sold out about this time last year, the Tour of Wessex is also getting full apparently. Accommodation and transport can be a nightmare but there will be loads more trains up to perth which you can then get a local train to Pitlochry. I've booked a B&B which you have to do 2 nights but I'll probably only use one. I can't wait for it, doing with my Dad who is crapping himself already about it, he's lost a stone from training so far!

What are realistic speeds at Herne Hill in a sprint?
I've used my speedo a few times but it didn't have the sensors so it was using GPS which spike a lot and not that accurate for sprints and stuff. It had spikes of 44mph occasionally which I know are totally wrong but also some more leveled spikes of about 33/34mph, are they realistic speeds?

I've got a Gary Fisher Paragon, love it, its a great bike. Found the transition from 26" easy and felt right almost straight away. If your wanting something cheaper the on ones are great value and get good reviews. I thing GT do a single speed 29er quite cheap, a guy at my work has one and raves about it. If your going for something cheap definately don't get a full sus, you'll be better off with a hardtail or fully rigid.

I think its a great idea but like has been said I would stay away from wooden handlebars. Unless you have thoroughly tested them and got sufficient insurance to cover yourself for if you do have a failure. Remember if you sell them and they snap and someone hurts themselves badly they can sue you for a lot of money.
I know wood is strong enough but if your not properly protected its not worth it in my eyes.

Dulwich rented a bus and a van with drivers to transport the people and bikes, they also provided cardboard and stuff to protect the bikes, think it cost about £15 per person.
I've not done it before but should be able to make it this year so really looking forward to it. How far is it? I might be tempted to cycle back as well.
