Hi there, I'm a noobie here although I've been lurking for a while, so go a bit easy on me please.
Having searched and googled and not found any answers, here's my problem. I've just replaced my aged and dilapidated Raleigh conversion with an On-One Pompino as the bottom bracket shell broke away from the seat tube on the Raleigh. Whilst I love riding the Pomp fixed, I'm really not confident through the traffic while commuting yet. I wanted to set it up fixed/free to have the best of both worlds. I've got an ACS freewheel which i fitted to one side of the hub, but when it's screwed on it binds up on the spokes, preventing it from ratcheting around. I'm thinking that this is because it is a double fixed hub and the freewheel needs a bigger shoulder to mate against. So my questions are,
1/ Is there a different type of freewheel that will fit without binding? or
2/ Is there a fixed/free hub available in 120 OLND which will give a 42mm chainline both sides?I know that the consensus will be to HTFU and ride it fixed but this really isn't an option on my commuting ride at the moment, as it's like Death Race 2000 getting into Woolwich on a bikeand I've already had a couple of 'Oh shit' moments where I've tried to freewheel.
TIA for any help.
Peace
Kurt

Very nice...

Really I had narrowed it down to a Fillmore or a Flyer. I still really like the Surly, but I don't see how I can build it within budget (admittedly with new parts), although I still keep playing with specs and prices to see if it can be done! I should have the rest of the money by next week so I need to decide by then.
Thanks to all for the input

Langsters seem to get such a beating on here. Dunno why that bothers me 'cos usually I don't give a f@ck what others think of my stuff.
So, if I was to rephrase my original question:
With a budget of £500-£600, what off the peg bike would you buy, with a view of long term ownership and upgrade worthiness of the frame?

JimmyP, thanks for the offer.
I really like the Steamroller. As an excercise I've just priced up a build and it comes to almost £900! eeek!!!
That's with CPX33s on Surly hubs, stronglight ST1000 cranks and reasonable kit. I don't think I can stretch to that but I have just seen that Wiggle now do a Steamroller complete bike for £599.My max budget was realistically £500 but I might stretch that a little and upgrade as I wear stuff out.Peace

This sort of follows on from the Surly Steamroller thread but I didn't want to hijack it.
I've been riding some god awful conversion (SS) for a couple of years which is now dead. I'm torn between buying the following bikes:
Surly Steamroller with a mid range components build (self build)
LeMonde Fillmore
Charge Plug
On One Il Pompino ProI've searched, I've read and digested but I just can't decide. The last 2 appeal 'cos they're Brit companies but everything is outsourced from abroad anyway. Getting a test ride on each is nigh on impossible and by the time I would get to ride the last one i would probably have forgotten what the first felt like!
I've got an MTB so although the Steamroller would take me a while to get all the bits (due to cost), I wouldn't be off the road.
So I'm throwing it open to the guys and gals in the know to help me out on this one.
Oh yeah it'll be all road work on this bike, commuting and training rides.
I work for the NHS who DON'T offer the cycle to work scheme so that's out the window too
Thanks

Yeah I wish. I'm a London Ambulance Paramedic and they've just offered me a grand less tax to stay on the shittiest rota that's ever been designed for an extra 6 months, which, being some sort of gullible spooner, I've accepted 'cos I can see a fixie at the end of the tunnel. However, if you're ever unfortunate enough to need my services just quote Londonfgss and I'll make sure you'll get the full motherload of morphine!!! ;-)
Anyway gotta go, I'm on duty and I now have to go and wrestle with a 14 year old drunk 'cos the old bill don't do drunks any more.

Yeah, I had a look. The only post I found said 107 or 109mm BB with Stronglight cranks, which didn't seem that well thought of. Just wondered what others were running and I wasn't sure if different cranks pulled onto the tapers of the BB by different amounts meaning that 2 different cranks would need 2 different length BBs for the same chainline, if that makes sense!

How the hell do you stop it. I'm regularly commuting 24 miles round trip on my Pompino and at about the halfway point on each journey I've started getting cramp in my calves. I can sort of stretch it out if I pedal heel down for a while but I'd rather not have it to start off with. It tends to come on when I'm riding on the flat or downhill. As soon as I get to an uphill where I need to work harder, it seems to ease. My fluid intake is ok, and my diet is alright. I've searched and not really found anything, just thought that some of you who put real miles in might have a few tips.
Any ideas gratefully recieved.
Peace
