the angle of the seat tube determines where you body needs to be to power into the pedals
for short fast sprints at the track
your body is up forward out of the saddle and over the pedals
this means a steep seat tube
fast acceleration also required at the track means a small rear triangle
if you look at the Cervelo this is why the rear wheel is actualy inside the frame
on steel bikes a steep seat sube with small rear triangle will mean very little clearance between rear wheel and frame
now ride a track bike in traffic
and it is blindingly fast and manoureable over short distance i.e between the lightsOK, that helps, thanks for that, anyone want to explain the reason why so many fetishise track ends, must be more than hispter fashion, no?

OK, dumb question time so don't shoot me:
I understand the handling differences between an out and out track frame and a frame with road bike geometry. Further, a "traditional" road/path frame has more road orientated geometry but track ends, so am I right in thinking that the drops/ends would be the primary difference between a road bike converted to fixed (especially one without lazy geometry) and a traditional road/path (as opposed to track) bike? If this is correct, then will someone explain what the big advantage is with track ends? I'm guessing that with both types tensioning the chain will alter the wheelbase a tiny tiny bit, but that track ends mean that the BB height will stay constant but is there more to it? Cheers. -

Well, I've got several geared already, the beater mtb, the crashed evans and the lurvely condor are all geared. I've been gathering the parts for the fixed and am nearly there. Once I can start using my arm I want to it built up, my two candidates were the evans or the bob, I need to talk to the solicitors tomorrow but I guess I can't strip the evans until everything is legally sorted (a year?) which just leaves the bob. I don't feel guilt about converting it, especially as keeping the paint job means keeping the cable guides etc in place. Now if I was grinding them off then yes I'd kind of agree, but its a frame that's been sitting rusting unloved in a shed for a decade or two and I'm gonna love it and stroke its polished bits...
