Bit of advice...
don't OD on pain killers!! :p
paracetamol: 36 of them will kill you..in about 3 days... so bad idea in case you change your mind and there is nothing you can do because liver failure has set in....
Aspirin: As far as I know... i doesn't kill you but give you really bad stomach ulcer.. you will be foaming in the mouth...i have seen aspirin kill people before - and a 75mg tablet at that, too. fully agree with the comments about paracetamol, too, although the number needed varies hugely between people and it can be as few as 8 tablets that kill, or maybe more than 40... of course, the higher the number, the greater the chance, hence why paracetamol packages contain far few tablets nowadays (in the states you can get packs with 100 or even 500 tablets of "acetaminophen" as it's called over there).

agree with somebody. i'm also working on some data at the moment that* i think *shows policies ken has introduced have vastly improved safety for cyclists in london (think cc and similar) although gotta admit that it is very incomplete at the moment.
also:
I must say, I am impressed with Boris Johnsons manifesto.
He proposes a crackdown on bike theft by targeting ¨2nd hand¨ bikes being sold on brick lane and also using decoy bikes!it might be a good idea if it were new. i do know for a fact that decoy bikes are already used by some councils and/or cycle campaign groups around high risk areas - for example, there have been several 'tracked' bikes placed around the bloomsbury/university of london area in the past, although obviously this is expensive and i guess is not done on a continual basis.
my votes? - probably green then ken, tho not 100% yet.

fuck - well i'm 31 and just about to start a phd having tried working for quite some years now. however, it's not a lab based one (epidemiology) and i am a doctor already, so i guess i've got some advantages there in that my options are open.
anyway, to the subject in hand. after much thinking about it and some advice from some friends, i am afraid that i am NOT going to take the cranks, and I will also let the saddle go to whatamidoing who is clearly very enthusiastic about it and therefore i think more deserving than i. may i just say thanks for waiting for me to consider this, though.
best,

ps - offer of help/advice about medicine still stands tho: i do have quite a cynical viewpoint about uk training and am happy to share my thoughts.
-
I wish they hadn't wanted me almost every day. :(
I really applied on a whim, and to a subject I wasn't really interested in (Biochem).
I wanted to be rejected, so i could take a gap year and do medicine.although, you may be surprised but this might open up more doors for you through one of the graduate medical training schemes. these are shorter (4 as opposed to 5 years) and you would also be eligible for an NHS bursary, i believe, so you would get fees paid and also a small stipend (think about 2k/yr) to live on. the important thing is that you try and get some experience in "caring professions" e.g. nursing or voluntary work or whatever. if you want more help/advice then feel free to email me (i think it's in my profile) - my nick ain't d0cA for no reason at all ;-)
saying that, i am a student again now! - studying a masters and about to go onto a phd on the lowly student budgets that one can get.
anyhoooo.. about the stuff: can i get back to you tomorrow evening, please? the link you posted is very helpful but i need to check a few bits such as my cranks and read the link again properly etc. i am also still interested in the saddle too, so hope you can wait until tomorrow for me to make a decision about that - appreciate that you have given me first dibs.
thanks again for all the help!

ok, this: i have a lemond fillmore (54cm if i recall correctly, but i think that is probably irrelevant). i don't actually know that much about what i'd called "advanced" bicycle maintenance - i'm happy tightening various bolts etc and changing wheels and chains, but i don't know what all the bits are called. i've had lots of problems with the chainring on the front and i think that a new set of cranks and the bottom bracket (i think that is the right terminology!) would be good if i'm going to get this all sorted properly. currently, i'm riding 39x16 tho, so i'm not so interested in the 50t chainring, although could possibly work that out depending on a couple of factors. i'm also not sure how long my current cranks are - is 170mm the standard?
a bit about my riding - i ride fixed in london, commuting to university about 5-10 miles/day. however, i have been track standing and skidding, and i've ridden all winter and done several long trips (some of the rides from the forum - around london and also to brighton).
advice welcomed! thanks
-
hey, i'm interested in the cranks and possibly the saddle. one thing is that i need to figure out whether it's the right size for my bike (i.e. do a little bit of research!) but i am in desperate need of something new... i'll try and do that tonight but might have to be tomorrow evening as i've a shit load of stuff to do. thanks!

and here's my agreements too: after looking kind of miserable at about 5pm when there were a few spots of rain where i was, it was great to see so many people out on the ride. lots of fun, colour and noise! especially great to see stompy out after hearing that you weren't going to make it, plus great to meet everyone else (again!) - , lebowski, build, sheep, MA3K, emily and loads of others.

A few months ago I saw the council removing bikes from fences around old st roundabout with an angle grinder.
But for some reason they were cutting through the frames! If you lock up in the same place frequently. Maybe move it around to avoid confusion.
same thing near kings cross just this week: a load of works on the pavement, but just before it i spotted a quite nice looking abandoned bicycle - bit rusty, no saddle, etc, but then realised that it had had the frame cut through. presumably by the workmen so they could put in more cycling parking things next to the ones that were already there.

Great! Two t-shirt designs that have both been ripped off a million times before. I think I might have a go at this plagourism/copyright lark, it's a piece of piss!
Seriously though, you wanna be careful if you do the CBGB's thing. I worked for a brand about 10yrs ago and we ripped off the logo to make a load of T's. After we'd manufactured them and started selling them, we got a letter from the owner of CBGB's(yes, in New York - fuck know's how he found out) threatening to sue if we carried on selling them.
Moral of the story is - design your own logo's!
or continue to rip off CBGB's... they were finally closed down a few years ago :/

Shit wheels, do you really need to add 400KB images to the page? I wouldn't mind if it was a sexy bike or something... but nope.
yeah, i'd join the vote for a resize....
btw, think there was a spelling mistake in one of the shirts (number 31 or something? ) with "accross" spelt like that - sure it's meant to be one 'c'

a friend of mine has gobbed a couple of times through windows of (particularly) drivers of white vans following close calls. however, he's now taken to blowing them a kiss and saying thank you whenever they try to run him off the road, and says that this tactic seems to be far more effective at neutralising the enemy!
personally, i think we've all had experiences of someone stepping blindly out into the road and either knocking or nearly knocking us off. 25 years ago, a postie stepped out from between 2 cars and knocked my dad off his bike and he (my dad) broke his arm and has never ridden since. of course, can't blame that on a mobile - just pure stupidity by someone not looking or being sensible in crossing the road. i am like dooks in that i often shout at people when i'm wound up cycling (and, actually quite enjoy it!!) although i don't think that it serves much purpose. the one ped i knocked over (her fault - and she admitted it, having played a game of dodgems with me in the middle of the road when the light was against her and she lost) fortunately bounced back up with those majick words "it was my fault" and i didn't have to say anything other than "are you alright?". my impression was that it was totally sufficient for her to realise that next time she needed to look - and probably wait for a green signal, too. i think if i'd have shouted at her, she'd have just been pissed off and angry at cyclists and not be thinking again next time she tried to cross the road.
grr.!

well, perhaps we can share them? if we don't need them at the same time... i'm based in newington green - jimalex, just left a message on your phone; i can pick them up today or tomorrow if you like.
ok, just spoke with jimalex. i'lll pick up one tomorrow, someone else can have the other adn then perhaps if somone wants to borrow one, i'd be happy to lend mine.

Hey everyone.
I have two bike bags to give away to a good home.
Check the link:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031292&N=dhb%20Elsted%20Bike%20Bag
Served me well on a couple of tours on the continent but as I'm not planning on any major excursions anytime soon they may as well go to someone who can make good use of them.
Mail me back or call on 07918871880. Pick up from Hackney.
Jim.i'll pick 'em up, if that's alright?
so here's a question for all those of you who have sprayed your frames: how much did it cost in paint to get a decent finish?
i'm just curious as exploring the options for re-painting a frame and don't know whether it's worth going the armourtech way (i think it probably is) or just taking the "cheap" option of diy.
thanks
