i'm pretty much set for getting my frame resprayed at armourtex, however i've run into a last minute unforeseen difficulty and i'm sure that someone on here will have some useful advice. basically, i realised i didn't know what to do to try and get the cups off the front part of the frame, where the forks go. so, i went to the LBS for advice and they said you need a special tool to take them off, and another one to put them back on again, and that they'd do it for me for £5 a shot. which basically means that the cost of repainting my bike has increased by a tenner, but there are two bikes that i was going to do, so it's actually gone up by 20 quid.
hence, i wondered if anyone has any advice about another way to do it [e.g. using a screwdriver], or if the bike shop is being unreasonable and i should try and bargain with them (or go somewhere else). or - the other thought - is it absolutely essential to take them off for the paint job?
along the same lines, i have a query about how to get the lemond logo off the front. it would be nice to have the option of putting it back on again afterwards, so i don't want to just rip it off and break all the plastic (?? not sure it is plastic, actually) but i can't figure out how it's attached.
i've included a picture with this post to show the two cups (black) on the top and bottom, and also the logo bit. sorry for complete lack of accurate technical language: i'm afraid i still don't know enough yet to provide all that detail! and, thanks in advance for any help.

*Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. Lot's of crap on how to put ride with one hand etc, but I highly recommend the advanced chapters. I don't drive, and even if I did, being a cyclist is totally different to being a driver in terms of how you behave.
i'm not sure i agree with that. thinking like a driver is the only way to cycle, i think, in london: you gotta be aggressive, you have to be confident enough to sit in the middle of the lane and piss off all the cars behind you that can't squeeze by (and therefore knock you off) etc etc. if you cycle around like some pussy cyclist, always in the gutter, you are bound to get knocked off sooner or later.

lol @ tommy, but gotta say bmmf is a wise ol' wizard, heed his words.
ps, i'm sure i posted my first post the same day i joined, although i did state that i'd been lurking for a while as there is a wealth of knowledge on this site. and i've now been riding fixed since september (day after i bought my OTP fillmore which i love) and still have my two brakes (front and back) and, moreover, still use both brakes, despite the fact i know how to skid. i also know what the pieces look like from people who don't know how to stop - in london and outside (ask 50x14, flickwg, object, stompy and a whole load of others for some of my experience) and it isn't always pretty. so my advice is be careful don't be stupid.

it will be crowded tonight :-)
last day of term at the london school of hygiene and tropical medicine - john snow was a famous epidemiologist and lots of people heading there to celebrate :-)
for more information, check out the john snow society: http://www.johnsnowsociety.org/ - there will be a chance to join tonight if you find me (i'll likely be upstairs somewhere looking fairly drunk!) for the unique price of 10 pounds only (lifetime membership and a free mug). i can also give more information about john snow...
anyway, gotta run hand my essay in!

i was out with my g/f last sunday. ride from highbury down through the fields and then round the roundabout going towards upper street when some car swings out of st pauls road and across the roundabout, coming within an inch and a half (literally!) of helen, almost knocking her off. luckily, she heard me shout and swerves out of the way, but the guy drives off without even noticing. i speed up and catch up with him, get in front of him at a light and then start screaming at him (i'm not usually that bad, although i have been known to shout before). he just smiles and points at the lights, then laughs and points some more. so i get off my bike, lean it against his bonnet so he can't drive off and go around and start knocking on his window telling him to wind it down. he laughs some more, but the door is locked. eventually, i'm walking backwards and forwards in front of his car to the door and back, (actually, i just keep walking forwards - backwards would be stupid!) and a load of traffic has stopped to see what's happening. so the driver gets out of his car and i continue shouting at him, telling him he almost killed my g/f and that he better apologise, which he initially fails to do. i ended up screaming at him for about 5 minutes, telling him he's a lunatic and that he needs to watch where he's driving, that he almost killed her etc. two things i did NOT do was 1) hit him and 2) swear at him - just shouted lots and made very clear that i was angry and he was dangerous. police were actually around the corner on holloway road hassling other people but didn't come anywhere near us. the driver and his mate are both of south east asian origin so claim they don't speak english - "very solly" repeatedly, but that's about it. not entirely convinced they were tourists as the car did not say "i'm a hire car" all over it as they often do, but i guess he could have been. bloody sunday drivers. grrrr :/

isn't it lucky boris won? he'll deal with the knife crime pronto. as, no doubt, will the tories when they are elected in a couple of years time.
[afterthought: oh, but not the causes of knife crime - which is what's really driving it. all that rage inside cos there's no jobs, nowhere to go and nothing to do, kids got their curfews and gotta be inside by 9pm. blah. doesn't this country make you sick sometimes?]

Ha i have that same problem, with wrenches its ok, but when you drop the welding torch things get a bit iffy. Lucky only pulled that stunt once (bang on trees).
ha! try it with babies!! i (almost) did that once in front of the father, midwife and obstetrician (yes, i'm a paediatrician) but luckily caught it about 2 inches from the floor. phew!

loads of places... why don't you do a google search and then if you find somewhere you think looks nice, ask about it. or give some kind of idea of details - type of food? budget (price range)? time? etc....
e.g. i'm looking for a place to grab a cheap-ish lunch around about 3 or 3.30 this afternoon (sunday). anyone recommend anywhere - all the places i know are m-f, 10-4 or similar and so won't be open...
ps - that's serious! i really am looking for somewhere for a cheap, late lunch today as i gotta be working. and preferably not a chain, either.

Sir, if you genuinely had a reason to be wheeling a fairly knacked Ridgeback with Eggbeaters on it (you were wearing trainers) down Grays Inn Road this evening before crossing over and walking back up then turning around and walking down again whilst carrying the biggest set of bolt croppers in London, then I apologise.
If the police officers on bicycles I gave your description to and showed this picture to a couple of minutes down the road detained you on your lawful way home I am even more sorry.

shouldn't that be on the 'spotted' thread?

lol@bobobob. and fuckin' a to PJS - recognised me straight off having not seen me since uni 10 years a go! nice one mate, hope to be seeing you again soon on one of the rides :-)
@mashton, thanks for getting this started, don't know if i'll be organising next week, but it sure was great to get out and see so many people. and everyone who i did see - hello again, good seeing (and meeting) you all :-)

hey, i gotta say that she has been lurking all year - and almost made it on a ride or two, but not quite! personally, i think we should convince jana to keep the bike and come on one or two of the rides with us before she leaves...
and, to hippy, yes it is that clean! and i'm hoping to take a look at it tomorrow... ;-)
great idea, that worked a treat - thanks tommy. am now just waiting for helen to finish taking apart her bike and then i'm off down to armourtex :-)
