i grew up and still live in this area (highbury/islington/essex road/de beauvoir/newington green/canonbury). i think it's probably better than it was and agree that it's pretty safe (well, as safe as anywhere else in london) during the daylight hours and also early evenings (commuter home-time). later on, if you know the roads and you're reasonably streetwise, i.e. keep a look out for what is going on around you, it should be fine most of the time... most all of the incidents i know about happen cos people are being foolish, or arrogant, or both - and incidents can happen anywhere, too. i know of someone getting smashed in the face and his bike stolen in finsbury park, about 8pm, lots of people about; another who got attacked by a bunch of 14 year olds while stopped at a traffic light in the angel about 9.30 at night (after dark) - but who were obviously just doing it for a laugh as they didn't touch the bike. both those incidents were years ago, though.
most recent scary thing that happened to me - other than drivers who try to kill you on a daily basis (we all have our regulars, eh?) - was kids in hackney chucking fireworks at me while i was riding on the hallowe'en ride: there was a group of lfgss riders in front, a few more behind, but decent-ish gaps between us (half a block?). suddenly there was this almighty bang and some smoke in front of me, followed rapidly by several more minor explosions behind me. i got the hell out of there!

my chainring ended up in a similar state one sunday am - luckily not far from polo. shit load of gratitude out to db and a number of others who helped me out - and no thanks to BLB who sold me a 48t silver ring in replacement for a 44t one, although credit that they did give me my money back when i returned it 10 minutes later. must say that every other experience ive had with them, tho, has been a rip off one...

fasteddy Friday night, heading East on Tooley Street, just short of Tower Bridge. I go to take the left slip road, (Buses and cycles only) and before I know it there I am sliding down the road on my butt. I like to think my bike handling is pretty good so it's either the Kenda tyres or the diesel residue from the busses...though I think a combination. I suggest a little caution if you are rockin' through there. Anyone else got any potential accident blackspots?
last thursday night, cycling home about 10.30 at night, probably slightly slower than usual but definitely not faster (yeah, i'd had a drink or two but nothing excessive, and i was going slower so i didn't leave my girlfriend behind) when i took a left hand turn and the back wheel just went. result? smashed - i mean smashed - my brand new glasses, and got a nasty cut just above my left eye below the eyebrow. bloke out walking his dog scooped me out of the road and said, "blimey! you're the second person to do that in 5 minutes. you need to go to hospital mate, that cut looks really big." i brushed it off with a "no, it's alright, i'm a doctor, i'll just go home and wash it out first" but then saw it was a massive cut so after consulting another doctor friend, ended up in casualty. luckily, all seen and done within 2.5 hours, but i did end up with 4 stitches (one deep and three superficial). aside from that, knee badly bruised and shoulder and cheek also grazed, all on the left, plus a bruise on my right hand, but otherwise ok. i blame it also on a slick of car or bus oils loosened from the road following the rain earlier that day.
anyway, was back on bike today and loving it :-)

hi, i saw there were quite a number of people looing for rooms at the moment, hence why posting this separately. the flat is an ex-local authority place - very big double room with built in wardrobes available, space in the flat for bike(s), big communal area. there's gas central heating, new bathroom and kitchen (including dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer) and a balcony - smoking outside (mostly!).
contact: please send me an email - asm AT fifthhorseman.net - i have been too busy to keep a regular eye on the forum recently.
also, a couple of things of note: i'm looking for "the right person" rather than "the first person"; i'm a student (so all that that entails - can work both ways!); i don't have a television; all bills except internet are extra. any questions, please feel free to ask

Any one who's interested, the current winning broker is via LCC's website as they seem to have done the hard graft for us.
Will keep you informed.looking forward to hearing the answers to this one. my understanding is that the LCC one is the best, too - about the same amount of money as elsewhere, but they're used to dealing with cyclists and so actually help. also, there's bonuses like 3rd party insurance, health insurance, and so on (or, maybe that's just if you join LCC). you get a further bit of money off if you also say that your bike is marked in someway: i usually indicate that it is, and that it's 'POSTCODE' is stamped on it. gets me another 5% off, anyways.
that said, i haven't got insurance: i spent the money (60-odd quid) on another, good lock at the time. now, i don't leave my bike outside without locks for very long, and certainly not overnight. i have a bit more cash now, tho, and thinking of getting insurance too....

hi, sorry to be a bit slow about this.. .am still interested in these, but need to find a tape measure to check the size of the frame (just moved house and all is chaos! :-) also, one other thing: i've never used tubulars before, and not entirely sure they're what i'm looking for as it will be for road usage not track and from what i've read they're not ideal. but i'm interested to hear your opinion because i never tried before.
thanks!

i have a fillmore i bought in september. it's been serving me well, but these are my experiences:
first thing to go was the tyres: i was getting endless punctures and so i changed to kevlar. now much better (have still gone through one though after riding onto some glass in a hole in the ground that i hadn't seen. oh well).
second thing is the brake blocks: the front one wore right down and feels like a completely different bike since i've replaced it. great!
third was the chainring: stompy put a picture of it up somewhere on a different thread, but all the bolts came out basically, and it got bent completely out of shape. i'm still waiting for a new one to arrive, but guess it will be what i've got already (3/32 - but i don't know anything about the merits of one or the other chain size, and this conversation above has just confused me more).
aside from that, i'd really like to paint my bike, but find i'm riding it too much so never have time! have now got a beater to do up, tho, so if i succeed at that any time soon i may have the opportunity to paint this one. i'd like to take the rear brake off, which i might accomplish soon but am still a little anxious about emergency stopping in london traffic. thats more an issue of confidence i feel, and something that will maybe change with time. handlebars would then be able to be trimmed further - it would be nice to take about an inch or two off each side - and at this point i think the bike would be looking nice. i must say that i haven't had any problems with pedal strike (once, i think, but it didn't upset me at all) except i do hit my foot against teh front wheel sometimes when i'm trackstanding, which tends to upset me. that, also, will improve with time i figure.

[i couldn't figure out how to include video in the link]
'bloomsbury watch' or something like that does this same thing around (surprise, surprise) bloomsbury. although i'm not sure how frequently. mostly it has been the bike stands outside ULU on malet street and near UCL.
