Thought I'd post a follow up to the xmas run to the coast; started pretty dismal, cold and overcast, but the cloud burned off when I got to Birling gap, and I was treated to clear skies and warm(ish) temperatures for the afternoon. The final leg (after dropping in for lunch at my mums) was tough getting going - had been a long day - but it was a crystal clear night with a brilliant half moon, a great feeling to push up and over Titsey hill for the easy run into town.
...one of the reasons for the update is to recommend anyone in the Seaford/Eastbourne area, or anyone thinking of taking a ride down there, is to ride the street luge course on the Beachy Head road. Gorgeous tarmac, flowing corners, stunning views. ...Alas, I was going up. There's a couple more hairpins if you follow the coast road along into Eastbourne if you want to continue your Alpine hit.

Below, Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters looking moody, the curves of the luge course, Exceat river meandering, the sun on my back over Ashdown Forest.
Hope you all had a good one on the 25th.

Just seen this, I've planned to go for a geared few laps on Boxing Day from 9 onwards, so I'll say 'hello/do a skid/on your right' if I see you. I'll have a camera and notebook to do some style-spotting for a blog; be sure to have your finest lycra on.
Zed, sure you can't drag yourself away from the scraps, you only live round the corner?

I'm off on an early morning loop to the coast to knacker myself out. London/AshdownForest/Seaford/along Beachy Head road/Eastbourne/pop in to see a great aunt for a cup of tea/back to town.
Would come and join the waifs and stray again, but I'd like to put a few miles in. Nice morning out last year - cheers Object - weather looking ok, have a good one.

I think the Vision 1's too heavy to helmet mount. It might be slightly better if you don't use the included mount, and just o-ring/velcro it to your lid, but your neck might complain before too long.
ah-ha, my mistake; I thought the Vision 1 came with the accessories for making into a miners helmet-type light, but thats the Vision 1 Adventure.

The Hope lights are gorgeous quality. I've got a Vision 2, been running it for a year and half now, and can't fault it ...apart from I wish it had the QR as on the Vision 1 above to make switching bikes easier.
It's kept me company on the DD, the national 24hr tt, an overnight to Glastonbury, a pre-dawn ride to the coast before work, and many night-time laps of Richmond Park.
Ed, if you can go for it, I would recommend a version with the rechargable battery pack. It's very convenient for the longer (or brighter) burn time over a weeks commute, at not much extra weight or bulk. Just a personal preference, although am thinking of getting a vision 1 to helmet mount for next year's nocturnal fun.

Hello Multi Grooves - apologies, only just spotted this and I got your name confused with another forum moniker - great chatting with you in the gusting winds, did you get your headset sorted for the Moots?
Adoubletap, well spotted and thanks for not subjecting the bike to the usual forum-Rapha treatment, it's a fantastic ride. Give us a shout in future.
...And no one's pointed out the 2010 club membership yet?

Ride of The Falling Rain is late Aug, but maybe you could use the route as the basis for a tour?
http://www.rideofthefallingrain.netI'm sure Brian would be more than happy to help out with out-of-season planning and advice, send him an email through TWMP. He's a top bloke and Colnago owners will probably be piped off the ferry by him.

Ah-ha Zed, didn't know you were about - I was a little jittery before the off - sorry my performance drifted into the mash. ...Or maybe it was the effortless, silent performance that went under the radar.
Winter training in RP + full moon rides back on (apart from the flipping deer cull coming up in Nov), be good to catch up.

Who's the beatified Rapha dude sat next to Graham Raeburn in that first pic. His halo is munificent in it's iridescentness.
hey, that's Rene, not Graeme. The guy with the halo is omnipresent on every noteworthy hill, calmly watching - and chuckling inside.
A great event, nice to see the shots, shame about the weather closing in. Didn't post a terribly impressive time, but was shaking off the end of a bad-yet-pathetic cough and cold.
Scarlet, I was looking forward to putting a face to the name, I was your minute man, don't know what happened, but sorry you didn't make it.
some Rouler-style pics here
http://www.rapha.cc/bec-cc-hill-climb-2009anyone doing the Dynamo Leith hill climb?

good to see you Jonny, looking dapper as ever. Here's the event I was talking about;

Would recommend the 5-day one next summer for enjoyment, or 10 days if you're up for destroying yourself (and bike). -

Hi all,
thought I'd throw it open, see if there's any takers this year; leaving Thurs 25th, 4.30ish afternoon from anywhere central London, heading due west, to Glastonbury. Planning to arrive at 2am if I make good time - or dawn if battered by headwinds, showers, and punctures.
I'm planning to borrow a Garmin this time, (so it'll be all about the pedalling not scratching round in the darkness and praying not to end up on the A303), riding a fairly strong but steady pace (81gi), route is 'relatively easy' with a few testing bumps at arounf 145 miles, and scheduled stops along the way including the delightful Stonehenge Services.
Last year I got mates to take my camping kit, but rode with everything I needed in event of it all going belly up at 2am, and had a nice rewarding pack ready for when I got there. Mostly cider.
Let me know if this looks appealing, be nice to have some company, other than the bored, lonely soldiers on Salisbury Plain.
Cheers!

I've got some originals of Coleman and Harrison the rabbit somewhere from Bike '95/'96(?) at Earls Court, when Jo Burt crazily agreed to spend the weekend doing request sketches for fans (Saracen owning schoolkids...) on the MBUK stand. Must have the patience of a saint. I had the pleasure of riding with him last year, top bloke!
I always loved the attention to the bikes and components, particularly the Uk manufacturers - Pace, Middleburn, Hope - you could tell what Jo was lusting after, or conversely, had recently had trouble with.
