Dude. We really need to discuss route tomorrow at the westend beers. You can't leave this purely up to me as we'll end up riding somewhere like here

Which probably isn't really the training that you want :]
Do you really need a big willy bike to do this? I'd like to give it a go though so where is it?

Epping's alright but to be honest I always end up playing in the Cultural heritage site. This is expressly forbidden by the way but those bomb holes are great fun.
The area's nice and hilly but it's mostly wide gravelled paths, unless of course you ditch the paths and just head straight into the forest.
Avoid the paths! There is a pretty interesting route from Snaresbrook to Epping and back. I tried it after a night of drinking and left waymarkers in green puke. I felt very i'll and scared a bunch of walkers with constant vomiting. Epping forest is only really any fun when it's dry and dusty, then you can get a bit of speed up, otherwise it's a bit of a slog.

My suggestion would be just to do a long/difficult ride that you want to do, set up a justgiving page to raise money for the charity of your choice and pester everyone you know to donate. Is what I plan to do anyway.
i was interested in the Big Issue cycle to Paris but didn't think i'd get enough sponsorship to make the minimum amount. I'm still up for cycling for charity though and agree with H2o about the way to do it.

it's a very distinctive bike..
can't be many tiny brown pistas around..
assuming it stays in London, it should be easy to spot. although something tells me that bikes like this end up out of town...
Chris will put it on the stolen bike blog for you when he sees this thread.
Where do they go? I've trawled other sites but never seen anything i think is fishy.
Or do you mean they go abroad?

Just staring at it won't get it built mate.
Well the cranks are rubbed to fuck but I'm sure I'll need em for a while. BB is sort of dependent on what I do about cranks...
I just realised i'd made an error. Doh!
"Starting to build...."
I think if you can find the serial number, mercian will date it by email.

i'm sure you know but this will help with anything pre 70's http://genetics.mgh.harvard.edu/hanczyc/mercian/mercian_homepage.html
otherwise i think most info on the Mercian website will help date it.
MIne was dated as a 1960 KOM.

On this topic, sort of,
What the general consensus on re-spacing the rear of an old mercian? I've got this 1960 mercian (KOM?) which needs a bit of love. I've got a whole heap of old shimano road kit, no money and feel like the only way it's going to get ridden is if i re-space the rear from 120 to 130mm and shove on the shimano stuff. I was thinking about it as a kind of long range tourer or something. Otherwise, i'll leave it as it is, get it sprayed at some point and then sell it.

Not sure if anyone has "lost" a London Langster recently but

This just looks fishy.
