I think it's just practice. Eventually it's second nature. When I ride without cleats (running shoes on flat pedals) I still twist my foot when lifting it off.

i know what you mean. when riding alongside other road users/riders on my morning ride i still grab their bars/push them away/smash them with my elbow. thank fuck i don't do my morning ride with a mallet. har har har

updated the OP with a choice for the ladies. we'll only be making the one set of screens so they'll have to fit across the size range from the smallest ladies to the largest mens. this might mean a compromise somewhere or the print on the ladies goes over the seams and looks nice and punky.

and the black mallet end will be fixed.
