OK so most threads derail pretty quick (much to the annoyance of Thor, despite the fact that it draws attention away from his mate's shit bikes). One of the OT subjects that keeps cropping up is the perfect cup of coffee. As my stovetop is bubbling away in the kitchen, I thought I would give a place where this subject could flourish, ON topic. So:
What's the best ground coffee? Beans?
Where can you get a decent cup? (More difficult than it should be)
Which coffee makers are best? (we're moving and a bigger kitchen means I can get a machine - budget has been signed off by g/f up to £300)
Best way of serving?
Etc.

A good article, thanks for flagging it Runcible.
There does seem to be a real vested interest in the status quo - I wonder how much the manufacturers of street barriers / red lights etc. spend lobbying government and producing research to suggest councils buy more from them?
Examples (off the top of my head) for the myopic approach to roads are:
Feb/Mar roadworks in London - am I overly cynical or are minor and cosmetic improvements ALWAYS made at the end of the tax year? Protect those budgets boys!
Manhole covers: clearly fucking lethal for bikes & motorbikes. The reason why there's never been any innovation to improve them? Roads are the councils responsibility, drains are the water boards'. So the interface between the two (manhole covers to you & me) fall into a no man's land. Neither is willing to take responsibility for fear of the cost it will incur. (Just imagine how much nicer they'd be to cycle on if you just griptaped the fuckers!).
I think High St Ken is better than it was (it's the fucking roadworks slowing you down eeehhhh) and agree that putting responsibility for actions back in the hands of the road user is good for everyone. How often do you curse the ipod listening, wrong way looking, jaywalking ped that feels they have the god given right to do what they like because they've been herded to a designated crossing point?

My great uncle (quite a decent roleur on all accounts) had a Youngs tourer. My dad inheirited it, took it back to them and asked if it was worth salvaging. They creamed themselves over it - did pretty extensive work on the seat tube (to free seatpost), beautiful repair job on the jug work and a very good respray. This was about 15 years ago tho. It cost about c.£50 (prob about the same as today given inflation).
I'd say that based on my gt uncle's general enthusiasm for cycling (decent level club rider but not made of money) it'd be a pretty good frame (his was 531 if that's anything to go by).
My story has a sad ending, since when I went to get the bike from my dad's garage, he'd given it away to the jumble some years ago without asking me if I had a use for it :o(
