@ Hippy: Yes, suitably vague I know.
@ Vegans: Chatter does seem to be coming from wheels/hubs but spokes aren't THAT loose!I think it may be a case of cleaning and regreasing all of the bearing points - hasn't been done since the bike was bought over a year ago. And also letting someone who knows more about it than me to look at my bike.
Bearing in mind I dont have many tools, or any kind of workshop, I'm thinking this is beyond my capability. Where can I take my bike and ask the questions put to you above where they're not going to a) look at me like something on the bottom of their shoe b) not be able to do anything for 2 weeks?

Since going fixed I have picked up some alarming sound effects both front and back.
Either headset or front hub feels a bit funny (like there's something binding or some sort of play between fork and frame) - especially under any lateral stress e.g. cornering, track standing. And then out back there's all sorts of general chatter coming from either BB or rear hub.
When I take the rear wheel off, the BB seems fine (running really smoothly actually), chain tension is good and wheel is sitting true between the stays. It's much the same up front - headset feels tight and running smooth and nothing obviously wrong with hub. It's only when I start to ride that the noise starts up again - skidding seems to exacerbate it.
The only thing that I am a bit concerned about is that whilst my wheels are true, spokes are loose (I can squeeze two between fingers and get a couple of cms of movement - if that makes sense). Is this causing problems?
It's doing my head in! Thoughts appreciated.

Enough of the hating, people!
It's great that they're on bikes and I hope they continue through the winter. I saw so many cyclists coming down from Theobold's Rd to Holborn at 0900 this AM - completely dominated the traffic, drivers had to give them space. Amongst the 'muppets' I saw 5 fixies (I was a GIRL) and 1 SS - all in the space of 500 yards. Made me smile.
(But then I was walking this AM and didn't have to put up with some of the irritating behaviour outlined above).

@ Hippy: not convinced. Surely if they're turning right - across the flow of traffic - they are going to wait for you to pass before turning? When you don't pass them but turn down the road, they just turn after you but earlier than they would have done if they'd anticipated you carrying straight over the junction?
Sorry I should continue this conversation over on C+. I've yellow carded myself...

Nobody likes being wrong. Much less having their noses rubbed in their wrongness. People don't want to kill you (most of the time) they are just insulated in their metal death machines and didn't see you. I try not to get angry or righteous - the net result isn't in our favour. Matt Seaton (whose book you have read Hippy) speaks a lot of sense on the subject.
I reckon it might be something to do with going fixed and not changing chain at the same time as the sprocket (this also justifies the purchase of a half link chain - anywhere other than Hub Jub have these?). The noise is doing my nut - I pride myself on a quiet ride. Again, thanks for the input, we can continue the analysis with the offending bike present on Sunday's social ride.
