i've ridden my mate's 2005 langster and it feels quite nice to be honest it's light, quick and zippy, even with the original forks. i don't know about the new ones, but to be fair i think the frame is not bad. but if you want comfy i think the lemond would be the more comfy option. the slacker seat tube angle and steel frame would make it more forgiving.
still, by the end of the day, it's best to try it out yourself. just make sure the shop get the bikes adjusted properly for you before you go and test it.
and for the 56cm flyer you tried, i'm still very sure it's the setup rather than the frame. if it's the frame it only means that you need a larger one.

for what you do even a macbook is overkill :)
what a lot of people don't notice apart from the video card is the architecture, the bus on the pro is faster than the macbook so with the same processor and the same amount of RAM you'll still have quite a lot of performance advantage. that was the same kind of difference between the imac g5 and the powermac g5 back then.
the pro's got much better build quality too. the aluminium casing can really take one hell of a beating that plastic can only dream of.

keep an eye out on the ebay/craigslist finds thread. some really good stuff do show up there. give us more idea about what you think is "decent". personally i always find decent frames on ebay going for quite good prices. loads of us here have scored 531 road frames for less than 60quid.
only other thing i can think of would be bike jumbles, but i do not know of any coming soon that's not too far away from london.
