my advice (although i'm not super experienced) - start with a really good quality
"fit and forget" headset and bottom bracket. For one - when these items need replacing it can be a hassle getting tools and whatnot.
For two - when these items get shonky/noisey it'll really ruin your ride quality or stop
you riding all together. If you don't have enough cash for fancy everything right now (and you don't) - just get
cheapish or 2nd hand stem/bars/saddle/seatpost/rims to begin with. This has the added advantage
of giving you time to figure out what you like/what fits you etc.
No point buying a £60 thomson stem now, when you might find you need one 2cm shorter/longer
after a bit of experimenting.Sorry if i sound a bit off but i honestly think this is the way forward - especially as the
difference between your langster and the BJ will be so great...Good ruck as they say in Japan!
PS> having said all that - once you know what you want and have saved up - GO BLING!
Shiny silver bits rule ok! -
MA3K OK route update:
Meet Prospect of Whitbey (E1W3SJ) from 8-9 O'clock on Saturday 30th.
Set off around 12 through the Rotherhithe tunnel EDIT(NO tunnel) and then back onto this route : 30th Night Ride - 'The Bridges'
How does that sound to everyone?few kwestchonz
1.on that map it looks like the ride starts just south of tower bridge... but we still meeting in wapping?
So are we riding south over tower bridge, then turning round and coming back over tower bridge the other way?
(There's a nice pub on tooley st here if people fancy starting on
the "correct" side of the river.
Just a suggestion. I personally don't mind meeting at the Prospect at all. Never been there and it
looks all historical like.If it's raining are we could do a shorter route - say from vauxhaul we could head into town for a drink etc
Perhaps at each bridge we could stop and gather for a sprint race over the length of it! Bridge racing could be
well fun!
Ooh i'm all excited now!

aidan i only reason i am not getting a messenger bag is because i will look like a complete fakenger,i know they are the best bag for riding especialy the amount i carry around but i just cant do it!!
Actually i think you're probably better off how you are anyway.
Two straps are better than one if you are not having to take the fucker off every 3 minutes.... -

I can't believe you're not riding cos of a bit of rain... I'm honestly shocked!
It'll make it even more fun. When it rains do you guys leave the bike at home
and catch the tube or something!? Jeeez! Why don't you just shorten the ride or something? Tower bridge to vauxhall bridge and all
the one's in the middle. Start it at 11pm after a few pints - brilliant fun no?!?!?DON'T BE SUCH PARTY POOPERS!

yeah - just been poking about inside my headtube and i can see that gingerly tapping the cups out from
the opposite side will have to be the way forward for removal.
Edwardes has not greased ANYTHING in there so it should be fun...As for getting whatever new 1" headset i finally decide on in there... a threaded rod, 2 nuts and two flat disks
it'll have to be!If i don't go the fit n forget chris king route, has anyone got any suggestions for decent long lasting aheadsets?

hippy
MrSmith i was in front of a lorry, he saw me from miles off (well 200 yards) he still tried to squeeze between me and a traffic island doing 50mph. i try and keep as far away from them as possible, and those bendy buses.
I was hit by a van the other day. I passed him and then 100m later he passed me as we turned a corner. He tightened up on the corner and I had to choose wire fence or van.. I chose van and slid along the side of his brown vehicle.
I chased him after the contact and yelled through his window a barrage of choice words.. he was apologetic "what, after the red light?" "fscking yes!" "oh, i'm sorry" SMIDSY alert!!! Fscking moron. He knew I was there and still managed to veer into me.. end rant.
key time!

I agree that sometime the cyclist is "at fault" - the point though, is that when the cyclist makes a mistake...
cyclist - he go squish! When lorry driver make mistake... cyclist - he go squish again!Cyclists aint squishin no one, no how.
So...
Lorry drivers need to be the ones taking the extra extra care - over and above the normal cyclist/road user.
Especially with all those oh so safe green bits of paint on the left of lanes.... -
what's that DIY tool i've seen people using - seems to be a metal rod with circular disks on it
for pushing in the cups evenly - but i can't quite see how it would work - the rods don't seem to
be threaded.
Can anyone explain / provide links that show clearly how it works?
Forgive my ignorance/inexperience - i don't trust edwardes to do a decent job with mine
after i've seen the condition of the (un-greased) headset they left in my new frame.if you want a job doing properly ...
