Ok. How much is a reasonable amount for something good but not 'serious', brand new? Any particular brands to steer clear of or go for?
I know next to nothing about it all. Most googling seems to give guides for parents buying kids bikes :S
If anyone could recommend any good web sites, it'd be appreciated :)

BMX has been mentioned on here a few times, so I don't see the harm in asking:
Anyone got a bmx for sale at the moment? Nothing fancy, just solid and the lighter the better, not too fussed what it looks like either to be honest!
I've seen a few bmx videos online and it reminds me of riding my mate's back home and fancy getting one for myself for when exams are over in a couple of weeks :)

I'm glad teenslain and object have told BC. I was going to head down there this morning for brake cable and planned on telling them. This has got completely ridiculous and out of hand.
making something in lab, that i spent 2days last week doing, for a tube to break in the final step :(
I hate it when that happens. Last week, the person I share my fumehood with hadn't secured their condenser tubing properly, spraying water all over my water-sensitive product :(

I have been (forcibly) riding brakeless now for about a week. And while I have gotten used to it I have a couple of things I would say about it.
- I don't like it
- I can't go as fast cos I know I wont be able to stop as quickly
- I need to maintain 100% concentration at all times. I had a very very lucky escape yesterday when I let my eyes drift for a split second.
- My knees are hurting.
Just my two-pence.
All 4 of those for me too (been trying to commute without touching brake). I find that I'm more of a danger to myself and others because I'm going so slow :S
Although for me the knees could be because of the gym... took my routine up a notch recently.
- I don't like it

How come you want the micro-adjust straps? I steered clear of them - looked like more stuff to break - and I tend to just really tighten up my straps when I'm riding and loosen them for walking.
Emoxfag - if the shimano ones don't fit well try specialized. I think the body geometry ones are designed for people with wider feet, which I remember reading is British/Americans or Europeans in general.

There's a lot of arty types on here, and I assume you need loads of data storage, so I'll ask here :) Can't seem to find much good info online... Amazon reviews are usually useless for these.
What external hard drives are good? Which are crap?
Must be firewire 400 (for my macbook, so no 800) so I can use Superduper and boot from it in case my hdd dies. My macbook is 80gb, so at least 160gb for time machine and superduper, then a bit more for extra storage - ca. 200gb.
Those Western Digital My Books look fairly good, but seem unreliable. My sister had one that suddenly died, and she says her friend had one that died too.
LaCie look good - don't know much about reliability.
Other things that are preferable: not too big, and not noisy. I hate fans. In fact I'd probably spend a bit more if it was near silent.

I've got these: http://wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360032439&N=Specialized%20Sport%20MTB%20Shoes
Perfectly walkable. I have them on when I ride to the pub and walk to and from bike store at uni, no problems. Really comfy riding, too.
Re the sandals... I wouldn't, if you brake with your legs. I wouldn't trust the straps to hold me in tightly. I don't get sandals on a bike in general... if you come off, your feet will surely get shredded to bits?

This is very useful; I made a condensed version for my phone when I'm out and about because I can never remember what is and isn't.

Yeah, I thought they were really expensive last year too.
The components on the off the peg one are a lot cheaper than what I was initially looking at, I suppose.
@Tynan - so you bought an argon 18 instead? :P

I, like many of you, have never had hassle from motorcyclists. I've spoken to quite a few serious riders through one of my mates back home and they're all very keen on road safey.
When i am on my scooter the thing that f@@ks me off more than anything else is when some c@nt of a cyclist decides to cycle down the middle of the road in slow traffic, getting in the filtering space of motorcycles. Not only are they slowing me down, but they are putting themselves and other road users in danger . .
Funny you should mention that. The other day, I was filtering down the middle of the road at end of Fulham Palace Road near Hammersmith Broadway. Total gridlock. Some c*nt on a motorbike (a courier, the ones with a green logo and black hard plastic pannier-style boxes on the back) suddenly appears right up my arse, calls me a cock, and points to the kerb, so I hurl some abuse back.
The filtering space of motorcycles? Excuse me? Where does it say in the highway code that the centre of road is "filtering space of motorcycles"?
How does it put me in danger? If anything, riding on the left hand side puts me in far more danger than filtering in a prominent position. Left turning cars just don't check their left wing mirror, and cut riders up.
And as well, the speed at which I would filter through is much safer to other road users than that at which a motorcyclist would filter.
For example, yesterday I was riding down High St Ken to Hammersmith, down the middle of the road because of solid traffic jam in my lane. Pedestrians don't look and just walk out - because they don't see cars moving in the immediate lane. A motorcyclist would cause much more damage to a ped than a bike.
Also, if I had been kerb crawling, I'd have no where to maneuver away to. In the middle of the lane, I have more options and can see further down the road and spot potential hazards.

Thanks for all the links! I'll have a trawl through them all this evening and over the weekend.
I'm 6', maybe 6'1" - not too tall?
if they don't want it, let me know :)
