I think that it is possible to have a different gear for forwards and backwards on a fixed wheel.

If you make a fixed by having two chains and two freewheels, each one fixed in a different direction, one on either side. By careful adjustment of chain length, you could get a much larger sprocket on the 'backward' freewheel than on the forward one.

Can anyone see a reason why that wouldn't work?

Tori and I have been chatting about moving next year and Herne Hill keeps coming up as a possible. If there is polo round the corner as well as the track then that is just a bonus. :-) I reckon that coming down to polo and chatting to peeps that live round that way would be a great idea.

EDIT: rang them up, got an answerphone so I put on my best phone voice and siad that I was calling from "A London Cycling Club" and was interested in reserving some space. I thought that announcing us as a load of wasters / alcoholics / fakengers would not be a good start.

On second thoughts we should get mouse to call them - he's posh enough ;-)
