TNRC Tues 30/7: Hemel Hemstead II - "Pitches and Hoes"
**HH start. Train out from Euston 19:04 **
Return : 22:25/37/53, 23:47.A new bmmf production - 39 miles, some draggy climbs, rolling lanes, great views, etc. First time out for this one, so it'll be a follow the leader (bmmf) type affair. There's an option towards the end to cut a few miles off if we are running late for the trains. Rain will stop play...

I wasn't that bothered about the Tour this year. Other stuff seemed more interesting. I could tell it was less boring than last year's edition, but sport in the non-participatory sense is something I can generally take or leave. The sports-talk really doesn't help though. Next year I'm ignoring this thread and turning the sound down on the virtual telly.

I signal with my eyes, head, arms, hands, anyway. I've always done this as I tend to soft pedal a lot rather than coast when I'm riding a freewheeliing machine.
Probably not a good idea to start hypothesizing over possible blame apportioning based on pedalling mechanics in the context of non-cyclist perception. There are already enough things that unscrupulous lawyers and deluded judges have in their 'it was the cyclist's fault' arsenal.

Maybe it'll be one of those things where there's an unconscious cultural shift. I still see plenty of riders stopping at red lights - more than a few years ago, which I'm guessing means it's roughly the same percentage, but of a larger whole. Due to the finite space at the front of the queue (which seems to be where the majority of non-RLJers gravitate toward), there'll come a point where as well as being highly conspicuous, they'll also make it very difficult to find the space through which to jump the lights. A sort of domino effect might ensue (I'm not talking about toppling over everyone who's waiting!).
The game's changed now, so most of the pro-RLJ rhetoric is anachronistic.

I had a bittersweet conversation with Tynan yesterday on the way back home from the park in the late afternoon (he's 6 going on 7):
T: That was nice of that cyclist to stop for us when we crossed (at the lights), wasn't it.
BMMF: Yes it was, but you're meant to stop at the lights when people are crossing anyway.
T: But most of the other cyclists just ride through as if they're going to hit you.
BMMF: Do they?
T: Yes.
BMMF: What makes you say that? Is it something you've heard other people saying, or is it something you've noticed yourself?
T: It's something I've noticed myself.
BMMF: Well I don't do it when I cycle. Would you do it when you start cycling more on the road?
T: No, because it might scare people.
BMMF: Good boy.

Yeah, Kelly's rubbish. He needs to refine his craft, make it more along the lines of what's been posted on this thread during the TdF; except it's all sounded like this:
